Hey guys,
I have a '65 Bassman and there is ALOT of buzzing coming from the head. I let the tubes warm up, but then as soon as I turn the standby off, it buzzes like crazy, and you can barely hear my '64 Precision over all the din. Any tips on what to do? I would rather fix it myself if I could.
Thanks!

A likely cause would be tired filter and/or biasing caps but it could also be a bad tube. Has the amp ever had a cap job?

Get it done or have it done -- ASAP.

Aging filter caps can drag down the entire power supply when they finally die -- which often turns a $75 cap job into a $275 rescue.

You'll find filter caps at Mojotone, Mouser, AES, and Angela Instruments (among others). There are also numerous Ebay vendors selling cap bundles assembled for specific amps that are reasonably priced. Stay away from the IC brand and go with premium-quality components......Spragues are good, F&T's are better. Be sure to inspect the resistors in the voltage-dividing network under your cap can and replace if necessary. Also be cognizant of the bias cap's polarity relative to ground. And discharge everything before proceeding.

You said buzzing come from the head ! do you mean mechanical buzz ? Or buzz from the electronic ( the amp) and to the speakers

Can you change the loudness of buzz with the volume ?

I have not enough information to said that a caps job resolve the problem.

It is the head. I plugged in one of my Ampeg VH-1 from the 70's and no buzz, so it's not the speakers. When I turn the volume up or down, it does not affect the buzzing noise that much.

What he's trying to ask is.is it coming through the speakers or, say if you unpluged the cab,it is actualy coming from the head.

I understand that you try another amp head on the bassman speakers and no buzz. Thank's super kid

If you turn volume control and not realy change the buzz so it look like a power supply failure. Burt this kind of failur sound more like " hum" than "buzz". In this case Retroverbial is right ; caps job.

But there a little chance that it could be some others parts to replace like power tubes.Hhard to tell without doing some tests by myself

That's why I asked if the amp had ever been re-capped (it hadn't, according to the OP). And likely, it hasn't seen much -- if any -- servicing since it was new. In these instances I always start with the power supply to insure it's delivering sufficient heater current and 435 ripple-free volts DC to the plates. If you don't have that, all other procedures are merely pissing in the wind. Once the P/S is squared away then any other symptoms are ready to be isolated and diagnosed for repair or adjustment.

Thanks to everyone, no the amp hasn't seen much servicing, it's been in my basement for the past five years. I found some replacement caps in a set on eBay for $70 so I think I'm gonna buy those and take it to my local shop. I'll let you know how it sounds when it's all fixed! :D

Spring for some new glass as well -- those tubes are likely just as tired.

Let us know how things turn out.

Rawk on!
