I just tried my replacement TADs in my SR, sound very sweet! Sound almost identical to the Sylvanias, let's hope these last more than 2 weeks! I start at 36 mA, but they sing at 44 mA and that's where they're going to stay :D

At 36 mA I get 450 volts and at 44 it's 442.

You can push a Twin Reverb with a mutha-fuggin' Caterpillar D9 and it'll still never deliver the harmonically-rich overdriven tones

Arjay
Cause you are biasing them at 32mA

I bias prudently -- just as Leo did.

O.K. I installed them, A little less "bounce" Livelyness than I had hoped for.
Three are at 32 ma, one went 33.5 over the others about 1.5 ????
Might have to go back to a long bottle, i like as much twangy bounce as I can get, think SRV Cold shot rythem sound.

I'll play around with the EQ a bit too, could just need a little tweak.

Update

My son must have been plugged in to the twin, the EQ was way off (KIDS)!!!

Now I am firmly in love with the TAD 6L6WGC, not only does it sound good, it has inspired my playing.

Great little bottles !!!

They should do well in a re-issue or even an original AB763 or later model.

I wouldn't chance them in an ultra-linear 135-watt chassis though.

Arjay, why wouldn't you use them in an ultralinear twin? What would you recommend in the ultralinears?
Thanks ahead of time,
filerj :)

Plate voltages in the ultra-linears will approach or exceed 500VDC and quite bluntly, I don't think the TAD's "pack the gear" to function in that environment. Got an ultra-linear? Try the Sov-Tek's or (finances permitting) NOS RCA's, Sylvania's, or Westinghouse.

Yes Arjay my twin is an ultalinear, about a year ago I retubed with the last of my stash of old GE 6L6's ( bought a couple sets when a local electronics store went out of business.) The last set lasted a long time, so I figure I'm good for a while. If I knew then what I know now I would have bought all the 6L6 and 6V6.
Thanks again,
filerj

+1000!

Who knew?

Ultimately, you made a wise decision. Those GE's should last a good long spell -- say, a decade or more. And they're worth their weight in gold.

RAWK ON!

I just had my Concert (II) retubed with TAD's and those 6L6 STR's are wonderful. I had heard they were good and bought a quad of them hoping they would sound great. I now know I have a back up set for my SFSR or the Concert...just in case. So far so good (couple of weeks) and they are a sweet sounding set of tubes! The Concert was getting a little noisey and lacked the oomph it used to have and since the tubes were the originals when I bought the amp new back in '84, I figured it was due for its cap job and all I can say is wow :!: :!: :!:

FWIW

Did you re-cap the Concert as well, Tango-Two?

Arjay...yes I did, I think I found a pretty good tech, talked with him twice before I trusted my Concert to him. He replaced all the caps, the rest was all good inside, he actually called me and showed me the insides and what he had done before he buttoned it back up...I know I should have taken pictures, but forgot my camera when I went.

He replaced all the pre amp tubes and of course the power tubes. It really sounds better than it did by a mile, I did have him save all the tubes and caps. He put everything into a nice little padded box for me...like I said, seemed to really know what he was doing. He was a older gentleman (in his sixties) and he totally understood my reservations. On the shelf above his bench I noticed he had the old RCA tube manuals and once I saw them, and with his understanding about the amp I felt very at ease with letting him have the Concert...and Since I couldn't send the amp to you out there to you  I guess he will do :!: :!: :!: He also suggested I try Celestion G10s in the amp after we talked about new speakers, he actually said that they would give me a good couterpoint to the SFSR if I wanted to run both in a sort of stereo setup...that really put me over the edge as I remember that was what you said about the G10s! So he must know what he is talking about :!:

Oh yeah. I always get those two towns confused (even when I lived out there 45 years ago!).

He seems to know what he's doing -- a rare and diminishing quality in this "disposible" day and age. Turn him loose on your '64 Princeton when it's time.
