What's the history of these amps, and the other "college" models like the princeton? I never hear much about them.... :?:

Were there other models too? Did they just die out in popularity?

There was just the Harvard and the Princeton.

The Harvard was considered a High end student amp or a low end Professional amp. You could gig with a Harvard. They are best known as being used by Steve Cropper on all those old Stax hits, including Green Onions, Soul Man, Sittin' on the Dock, and so on. Cropper did a drawing of the studio layout once and id'ed his amp.

By the early 60's the two amps were very close in size and power. Harvard (Tweed) was 10 watts with 10" speaker. Princeton (Brown) had become a 12 watter with a 10" speaker. The circuits had become very close in design. The Harvard was discontinued when they went to the "brown face" design.

I usually use a UF4004 to replace the stock selenium diode. The voltage usually comes pretty close to stock. If it's too negative voltage, you'll need to adjust the dropping resistor accordingly.

It would be the 6800-ohm resistor that may need to be changed. Note the polarity of the cap and diode.
