Hi Gang,

Still looking for the right Fender amp (already have been thru a mint Concert II, a Pro Tube Pro Reverb, a HRD, a Supersonic 22, a Prosonic and have considered a Silverface Vibrolux Reverb) and have the chance to pick-up one in good shape for about $300. What's the consensus of opinion about the Bandmaster 135 in terms of it having the classic Fender clean? While I would ideally like another 70's Silverface Twin or Dual Showman Reverb, the weight of the Twin and the prices are deterrents to pulling the trigger. If I snagged a Twin, I would definitely put it in a head shell (extra $200). So can this Bassman 135 do the job (of course without reverb and trem) or should I bite the bullet? Thanks!

Matt

The Bassman 135 does indeed share most of its architecture with the ultra-linear Twin Reverbs and Dual Showman Reverbs. The "bass instrument" channel is voiced similar to a conventional Bassman, with a "deep" switch for added LF emphasis. The "normal" channel's characteristics are identical to the normal channel of a TR or DSR. You will never see 135 watts from this chassis, however. I've bench-tested a number of ultra-linears and the maximum observed output when driven by a 1000 Hz, 350 mV tone (a typical guitar signal) measured 122 watts. Still respectable of course, and much more grunt than you're likely to ever need. The amp is equipped with a multi-tapped output tranny that will safely permit operation with a variety of speaker loads, from 2Ω to 8Ω.

HTH

Best of luck, Matt.

BTW, the later Bassman 135's had a "middle" tone control added to the "bass instrument" tone stack. Around 1978, if memory serves......
