Lord have mercy! Look at that thing of beauty! I envy you Reb! 8)

So tell us, what makes that '66 DR the best sounding? Does it have different tubes and speaker compared to the other 2 DRs? Were there any major changes done in '66?

I know the sweetest DR I ever heard was also a '66, I wish I had $2500 to grab it... it didn't have the original speaker though, it had an Eminence Cannabis Rex, but the tone was the sweetest I ever heard from any amp. I've heard other SF and BF DRs, but that '66 was just magical! Not sure how much the speaker had to do with it.

And let that (finally and forevermore) put to rest the oft-repeated cork-sniffer's chant that everything from the CBS era was crap.

I don't believe there are any rules as to which era is best when it comes to amps, BF vs SF, or even guitars... some amps have mojo and some don't, and some can be slightly modified to make 'em sound great. I let me ears be the judge

+1

I own several silverfaces -- they earn their keep, just as my blackfaces and my (gasp!) re-issues.

It's a fact that same models from the same era can sound different, the schematics from the vintage era show that "values shown + or - 20 % " ...that can be a significant range and affect the tone and as the components age and drift until what we have today, with some things replaced over the years, you can play different amps and they sound very different...factor in speaker recones or original, replacement speakers and tubes and each one is unique and has it's own voice.
The '65 DR is beautiful,it's been pampered,I'm the 3rd owner,I replaced the original Oxford with a 12F150 Weber,it's a bright shimmering tone machine that has been serviced by one of Nashville's premier amp techs,Todd Sharp...but mainly the filter caps and only a few coupling caps.
The '66 DR that I said sounds the best has a Weber, put in back when they called them a C12,about 10 years ago, other than the filter caps the inside is original....it just has that magical tone...MOJO defined....I can offer no other explaination.I bought it from a guy who had it in a closet about 15 years ago...he was the 2nd owner so I'm again the lucky 3rd. It will stay with me until I kick the bucket unless something happens.
