and the RIs are crap

That's been my experience whenever I play my DRRI... people walk up to me after I'm done playing to let me know that my amp sounded like crap :(

Thanks for confirming what I already knew

A "real one" can cost over $2k, a used DRRI + the right tubes + the right speaker can be had for less than $1k.

What tubes were in the ones you were stuck with? Looks like your "new" DR came with RCAs, that alone will make a huge difference in the DRRI.

There's no dispute that a lot of what's coming from Corona of late is beset with issues. But there's nothing fundamentally wrong with the DRRI's design -- only (periodically) with the execution. My '93 (first year edition) sounds as a sweet and ballsy as any amp can sound. It's never failed, never developed any problems, and has now logged over 200 incident-free gigs.

Factor in a bench-check, some long-neglected maintenance, and at least a partial re-tube. Then add in the cost of replacing that worthless fooking Oxfart with a decent speaker befitting the amp.

The subtotal for that alone is good for $250-$300. And that's not to say a re-issue might not require the same (especially if it's equipped with crappy OEM bottles).

I wouldn't bet the ranch on that.

I've bid on good vintage amps and I've received slugs as well.

Either way, I prepare for the worst until my inspection proves otherwise.

The P2P construction is preferred. But I prefer what my ears tell me rather than what my nose says the cork smells like.

I've been at this a long time. And only a select few on this forum can match my collection of amps.

For your poverty, I am blameless.

A good day to you, sir.
