Re: Bias...you won't learn how to do it easily, seems all the "tube gurus" have the "right" method and it's confusing as hell to try and wade through the methods if you don't know much about the inner workings of the amp, some of the methods suggested are downright dangerous.
The DRRI and bias are discussed here and many places on the net but it would be best to let a GOOD tech do it and watch and learn first.
Re: NOS tubes...they're becoming scarce and expensive,eBay can be a source but it's a crapshoot at times also...there's websites that sell tubes and now some of the new production tubes are good.I'm currently trying out Tung-Sol brand 6V6GTs in my '65 Deluxe Reverb and they sound good, really good, and also I popped in a pair of the Tung-Sol 5881 tubes in that '60 Super,I had NOS Philips 5881/6L6s in it and the T-S tubes sound better,we will see how they hold up...I'm trying the new ones because they're much cheaper and readily available, and hopefully they will keep improving the quality of them.
I hope some of this is understandable...it's 3am and storming outside so I'm ridin' the storm out.

Avoid the crapshoot- Mike Kropotkin at www.kcanostubes.com is great. I've dealt with him now for 9 years on my Princeton, Princeton Reverb, and Bandmaster.

6V6 - the Mazda NOS 6V6 sound sweet and won't break the bank. Have them in both of my Princetons. Same with the reissue Mullard CV4024 for the phase inverter - makes a big difference over $8 JJ's.

Email him with your amp, tone goals, and your budget and he'll come back with some great tube recommendations.

I have just put the CV4024 Mullard valve in the PI position following advice on www.kcanotubes.com (and here, thanks) and WOW!! What an improvement!! I really recommend this switch.

Yep, that Mullard is a secret weapon in improving tone. Glad it worked for you!

Yeah, thanks. I put one in V3 as well and that mellowed the reverb nicely too.

Although I own only vintage DRs,I wouldn't hesitate to buy a good RI Deluxe Reverb if I needed one....the vintage amps are expensive...too much really, the first one I bought was $750 about 12-15 years ago,now they're over $2,000.

Most of my inventory consists of vintage amps but my "modestly" modded DRRI rates right up with them in terms of tone and vibe. Sure......I'd love to have a vinty Deluxe Reverb. But I certainly wouldn't dump the re-issue I have to make that happen.

JMO (and of course I know soooo little about tone)

My "modestly" modded DRRI does a fine job too :D a well setup DRRI can sound as good as the average vintage DR IMO... but yeah, there are some vintage DRs out there that are just too sweet sounding! But it doesn't mean the DRRI is a bad amp.

Well, the person who made the remark about "playing on a real one",just bought a '74 SF DR so that must be the "real one". a newbie vintage owner probably..."vintage" can be a subjective term,a '74 SF DR doesn't really fit my vintage ideal...pre CBS Leo Fender era is the cat's meow, but early CBS is cool too....it all depends on the person.
I'll wager that in a blindfold test with the RI amps y'all have and a vintage DR,the guy couldn't pick which was the "real one".
I own a few "real ones"...but,I would be very happy with an "RJ custom amp that should have been"......damn giddy about it even.
Sorry dude, when you crap on somebody's excellent RI amps, you lose the "vintage amp owner's coolness factor". try again.

I can respect differing opinions and opposing viewpoints. But if one is gonna assume the posture of a "cork-sniffer" he better damn well have the credentials to back-stop his assertions......let the gentleman make his case.

If he can.

Make my case..how about i make some bread playing on this little Deluxe...and for the record ..i have several vintage amps ..and have played with a lot of famous artist...and the RIs are crap...compared to the real thing...just google me ..not trying to piss on the guys parade...i just dont think the RIs measure up..to the real thing....if i offended anyone i am truly sorry.. and i thought this was the vintage section...so shouldnt this be in the other amp forum?
