I just got a Blackface Bassman, according to the sheet inside the cab it is AA165, but transformer dating says it is a 1966. The sheet is also stamped PD

How can I tell for sure which circuit it is?

Thanks

I believe if it's truly an AA165, it is a blackface. Should have bias pot. Whereas, the AB165 substitutes a hum pot for the bias pot. And some other, pre-silverface mods. The AA165 is closer to the desired AA864 circuit, it seems. You tranny may have been replaced, for some reason.

Others can fill you in on date stamping and other codes to veirfy date of manufacturer.

PD is April of 1966...and would be the AA165 if it hasn't been modded to a large degree...Arjay knows more about the Bassman amps,he might have different information.

The AA165 Bassman was manufactured for less than one month, superceded in late January of 1965 by the AB165 circuit revision. If the tube chart is ink-stamped "PD" and the EIA codes on the trannies correlate to 1966 then the amp is likely an AB165. If so, and in unmolested trim, the amp will have the output-tube balance control rather than a true adjustable bias pot.

Now you have a justifiable reason to add one to your collection.

When the "right" one comes along, you'll know it.
