Hi all,

I've been using my JCM 800's, 1936 Cab for a while since I got my BF Bassman, but I've wanted to buy a separate cab for it.

I've found some cab makers here (namely Zilla cabs in the UK), that do a somewhat replica of the old fender piggyback cabs.

2 questions:

Is 4x10 significantly louder than 2x12? For a Bassman (BF) what configuration would you guys recommend (mainly for home use).

If 2x12, what are the best speakers that would go with the Bassman? I'm trying to get that classic warm clear vintage fender sound, that we've come to love from the classic super reverbs, twin reverbs, 59 Bassmans, etc.

Thanks!

I've got Webers in mine.( 12F150's ) I saved the original blown Oxfords. The Webers do it for me. Others will chime in with recommendations. Good luck with your choice.

Not sure which is louder, but both are excellent choices. I just recently got a SFSR with the original CTS Alnico speakers and I love these 10's.

The Weber 10A125 10 inch speakers are a great choice and I have heard nothing but great things about these....if you can't locate some CTS Alnico 10's.

Here is a description from of the 10A125 speaker from Webers website:
Bright, punchy, later/smooth breakup, aggressive, articulate, compressed/fattened at high volume. The favorite for late 50's tweed amps such as Super, Bandmaster, Bassman, etc.

Just bear in mind that the AB165 Bassman needs a 4Ω speaker load, regardless of the number, size, or type of driver(s).

For four (4) speakers in a parallel configuration, you'll need 16Ω speakers.

You should spend a little time listening to 4x10 vs. 2x12. I found recently that I prefered the 2x12, it was as if the 4x10 had something missing in the mid area that I was used to hearing.

One configuration vs another shouldnt be louder though, same watt rating on the amp, just different frequency responses depending on the speakers and cab enclosure mainly. I had my bassman on a JCM800 Marshall 4x12 and it sounded great, on a Fender Ge412 it had less bass and sounded cleaner, go figure...

Likely the difference between the Eminence and Celestion speakers. Given a choice, with your amp, I'd pick V30's over anything else. YMMV.

Got rid of the Marshall a little while ago. Now I have a bandmaster on the ge4x12 cab but I'll have to disconnect two speakers to get 4 ohms out of it.

I was looking at the C12N's but isn't the new C12N's supposed to be a bit too bright? I often use both standard tone and turn on the brightness switch on (it just offers some glassiness which i find pleasant if I turn the treble down a lot). I also worry if it'll also mess up the distortion. I use a Zendrive, Marshall Guv'norm or a MXR GT-OD, will it make it too thin and ice trebley?

Weber speaks don't seem to be sold widely in the UK, and the 12F150's or Blue dog's seem quite expensive, £110-130 a pop, and I need 2!

I seem to have settled on 2x12 so more suggestions ideas appreciated!

Celestions should be readily available, across the pond.

I'd go with a quartet of 16Ω V30's (be prepared for a real "seismic" event).

Ok, seems after some looking around and from the responses I've "somewhat" narrowed my selection from all speakers to a few. I don't mind using combinations of speakers on a 2x12 for the most optimal fender vintage sound for cleans and overdrive (No ear aching ice picky sounds). These are the most acquirable and within my price range. Unfortunately the Webers though cheap, are hard to buy here or expensive!

Jensen C12N and/or C12K and/or P12Q

Eminence Red white blues and/or Cannabis Rex (although i am wearing this alone takes away that "sparkle" and/or Swamp Thang.

Celestian Vintage 30's or G12H30 (greenbacks?). Although I was told this is more voiced in a British style such as Marshally, which I don't really want, I guess?

Thanks!

The V30s or Greenbacks will yield a certain "Marshallesque" tone to your Bassman. Most players enjoy that type of "fattitude" from a blackface Fender, albeit with some cost to the traditional scooped Fender sound. I haven't owned or used the Emi RWB's or the CR's, but I've had the Swamp Thangs before and they're a solid speaker -- not quite as "bright and shiny" as a ceramic Jensen but they do well in either an infinite-baffle or bass-reflex enclosure. You could do a lot worse.
