I'm a simple kind of player,I like to keep things bare bones,so when I think of master volume or high gain knob amps,I think of my Mesa Boogie, which I could never get a good sound out of but my son can.
What we're probably talking here is pre-amp gain distortion vs. power tube distortion or "breakup"....pre-amp has a buzzy sound, think of Santana's tone....now think of the tube breakup sound of your Champ when you're pushing it....that throaty, hoarse distortion is mostly that 6V6 power tube plus some pre-amp gain....a great example of that is on the Layla album on a cut called "Have You Ever Loved a Woman",Clapton's version of a Freddie King classic.
That song was a blueprint for what I wanted to sound like on my blues lead playing....that opening 12 bars,if you get a chance listen to it...that's my base for lots of what I do,not just a pentatonic block, but all over the neck.
When, after going through so many different amps and not getting the sound I was after,I came back to a Fender '66 Deluxe Reverb, and bam! there it was...that warm,crispy,choc-co-latey tone :o
The best blues tone in the world to me is a sax, that throaty, husky singing tone...apply that to the guitar and you really have something.
It's almost 2 am....I couldn't sleep...maybe this makes sense. :)
