Just got through R&R this puppy. Sounds extremely sweet. Dripping wet and deep on Princeton I had lying around. Running 6K6GT it came with (think Sylvania), JAN Sylvania 12AT7WA, and Siemens ECC83. Awaiting NOS 6K6GT.

I changed out all the 'lytics. The 1K-ohm, 5 watt cathode resistor on the 6K6GT (it measured out at well over 1.5k-ohms). And the 10K-ohm, 1 watt resistor in the power supply. And the rectifier diodes.

BMW, nice beast to treat !
The number on the Siemens ECC83 indicates lot, year ... with that you can find if it is a collector one or not. 8) 8)
For lytic caps, i saw +65°C, just to say "not so high" , I don't say that there is a risk, just to know if you have monitored temperature at this point with your multimeter (if equipped with a thermal probe) to know if it's enough.

Spragues have been putting that 65C on their big blue colored Atoms for years. For some odd reason, I never had one fail yet. Esp if they sit separated from the rest of the circuit under their own lid. I was going to go to F&T (47mfd/500VDC). But, I've had such good luck with the Spragues.

Anyhow, that Siemens in a real Siemens/Halske Munich made (early 1960's). I have a bunch of them I squirrelel from a person that didn't know what he had. Prolly, replace it with an BP RCA 12AX7. But sure sounds good:

Thanks for the info, Sprague is well know and no bad feedback on quality (up to my ears), I guess that excepted close to the valves the temperature is not so high and on "point to points" wiring there are less thermal couplings. 8)

The 6G15 doesn't really generate that much heat. The single 6K6GT (6V6GTA in the re-issues) looks to be configured as a self-biased power pentode -- a simple but effective driver. There might be a thermal issue with the electrolytics but only if the unit were place atop an amp for prolonged periods. Of more critical import are the foam pads used in the travel lock system. Those can dry out and rot away over the years. They should be inspected periodically and, if necessary, replaced.

Arjay,

Thanks for the tip on the foam padding on the tank. Going to haul the '62 Brownie Pro with the Reverb Unit over to a friend's house this weekend. Tell you how it stacks up to a Super Reverb Reissue and a EC Strat with Lace Sensors.

I'm bringing my LPS with those crazy 500T and 496R buckers.

Guess I'm going for that 1966 VC. I don't know why no matter HOW GOOD SHAPE you buy a silverface, it ALWAYS looks like some blind guitarist(s) stabbed at the panel trying to plug in his guitar.

Hate to admit it, GF bought a "Pink Lady" rep Japanese made Strat, She gets the SF VC. :)

That silverface Vibro Champ looks like it's seen some salt-air exposure. Those polymer-coated front panels do not fare well in that environment. My late '67 Showman's panel resembled that -- I learned that it had been used on a Carnival Lines cruise ship for many years. I ended up converting it to blackface cosmetics.

This SF DR came from Miami,it had once been in Criteria Studios where Layla was recorded...but not sure where else...there's oxidation on the panel,I never thought of salt air,but could be what caused it,....RJ?

That's the other amp you're leaving me in your will, right Reb?

(the first one being the 6G4)

Yeah, looks like some salt-air exposure on the panel. That acrylic polymer finish just didn't wear as well as the enameled blackface panels. Whiskey, soda pop, skin oil and sweat......they all took their toll over the years. Still, I do love that drip-edge silverface vibe.

One nice mod I picked up on another site. The original 6G15 circuit did NOT have a 1-meg ohm resistor tied from reverb recovery grid 12AX7/7025 to ground. I guess, often poor contact with the patch cord or socket could lead this tube to thermal runaway.

To prevent that the Reissued Reverb Units place a 1-meg ohm from 12AX7/7025 grid to ground, in case of poor cable contact. See R13 in reissued schemo. Just use a 1/2-watt carbon resistor from this point to chassis and you are safe from frying a 12AX7.

Original 6G15 schemo:

Reissued schemo with 1-meg ohm resistor (R13):
