[quote]I had one other question about this unit. Why did Fender originally use 6K6GT tubes, rather than more common 6V6GT? I know that the 6K6GT is rated for slightly less output, but a TON of sites have posts saying that they swap 6V6GT into their vintage units, no problem./quote]

I don't know why Leo decided using a 6K6, but it sound warmer and I like it better than the 6V6. You can try different brands of 6k6s, it makes a difference. I prefer GE 6k6s and Sylvania's.
You can also use a 12ax7 instead of the 12at7, just try and find out what you like better.
I like a 7025 GE, 12at7 GE and than the 6K6, all NOS tubes in the reissue unit.

I recently picked up a '63 Verb reissue for $400 on ebay. The 6K6GT is on the way. There was no choice of manufacturer which I expected. Just NOS out there. It may very well be an old USA made tube. That would be fine with me. I ordered JJ tubes to cover the AT7 & AX7 spots. I'm sure to experiment with those looking for lowest noise. I have a Custom Vibrolux Reverb that's been modified with all new caps and the Moyer mods plus some other improvements. That amp is really quiet and has great tone. Channel one has Brownface Vibroverb tone. Channel two has been modified to Vibroverb Blackface tone.

The vintage Mullard, Telefunken, and Matsushita 6K6's are also very good.

Doesn't the '63 Reissue Reverb Unit use a 6V6GT? Or does the post production work modify this tube position?

Thanks!

The re-issue 6G15 does use a 6V6GTA as the power pentode but I don't think it's much of a stretch to mod one back to the original 6K6 layout.

I picked up a Fender Stand Alone Reverb Unit on ebay for $400. New. I pulled the 6V6 and ordered a set of tubes from Tube Depot. They have NOS 6K6GT's for $8.99. Th circuit is designed for the 6K6 and is supposed to sound much nearer to the mark with it. I located a complete layout of the unit, also the schematic. Then I copied the complete list of parts in that thing. It's got 14 caps in there. I'm going to order all 14 caps from Tube Depot. The larger ones are F&T. Also Sprague atoms and orange drops. When I modified my Custom Vibrolux Rev; step 1 was doing a cap replacement. I was impressed at how much quieter it was. I hadn't even gotten to the wiring changes yet. Now she's just right. The cap replacement job on the '63 Verb is an experiment in sound. I think there will be a considerable improvement in silent running and smoothed out tone.

RNC, nice score, getting a '63 Verb for that money sure was a good deal. I have been looking off and on for one of those in that price range, but they seem real far and few btwn eve on ebay! Enjoy the 'verb.
