In 1975 I bought a Sunn Colosium Bass head and a black fender cabinet with a single 15". The grill cloth was black, not silver It was badly torn and I replaced it with silver as that was all I could buy. I tried playing bass through it but it had no bottom and I blow the speaker. I took it to a shop in Salt Lake. The speaker was a mid-range Altec Lansing. The speaker was mounted on a board about 2" back of the the face board and was side baffled. The guy at the music store was pretty excited and wanted to buy it on the spot. He showed me an old picture of BB King playing a bandmaster with this same bottom, but blond tolex. I got the Altec reconed and fell in love with its fat moody sound. I have never seen another cabinet like this. I heard that Leo had a European sound specialist design this cabinet but it was too costly. Anyone know some history?

It sounds like you have a Fender Showman "tone-ring" cab. This enclosure mounted the speaker (spec driver was a JBL D130F) to a stamped-steel "donut" that was itself affixed to an outer baffle board while an inner baffle ducted the reverse sonic waves from the speaker to the front. This design is also known as a Helmholtz ring radiator and was the most efficient bass-reflex cabinet ever developed for a Fender amp. Dimensions for this box were 24" x 36" x 11½", with the typical tilt-back legs attached to the sides. These cabs are quite rare now but remain popular among knowledgable guitars. A similar 1 x 12 arrangement was also produced for use with the first piggyback Bassmans as well as a 1 x 10 configuration for the first versions of the piggyback Tremolux.

Does it look anything like this?

If so then it's a tone-ring cab as Arjay mentioned.
