Looking for opinions.........

Do you think that the HRDeville 3 gives the classic Fender clean sound vs. a Silverface (i.e. early to mid 70's) Twin Reverb??

I have owned three Twins ('81 Silverface and two '94 PR266 Twin Amps) and the massive volume and weight keeps me selling them, but I love their clean sound(s). Am I kidding myself considering the new Deville 3? A 40 watt Deluxe Reverb would be perfect!

I play in a stereotypical classic rock band doing the week-end warrior bar circuit and plan to run the Fender "whatever" with a 36 watt Marshall Plexi clone.

I can pick up a used '72 Silverface Twin for $875 and the new Deville 3 is a few bucks more. Thanks for the help!!!!

Matt

Ten years from now the '72 TR will be worth about $875 while the HRDvl will be worth......(drum roll, please)......about $375.

Let your checkbook be your guide.

Hi mdortona,

The older amp will possibly need some TLC (30 + year old caps etc). The new amp comes with a five year warranty. The Devilles are the best of the HRd series, and the version III are using beefier circuit boards among other improvements, so reliability has been good for these so far. I am a fan of both Twin Reverb and HRd amps. If you can do your own amp work, as the TR may need some work, then go for the TR, it would be better for investment and the clean sound is hard to beat. If you would rather have a warranty, go for the HRDvl, which also has a great clean sound, but is warmer than a TR.

How about SF Vibrolux Reverb. It's 40 watts and runs on a pair of 6l6's

The SF Vibrolux is an interesting idea, although they seem to be a bit pricey. Thanks!

Off the 'bay or Craigslist? I did a very fast look on the Bay and I think the minimums were $999 and $1000, but you're right, they are in the ballpark I guess.

I picked it up at guitar center for $900.I mean you are not talking about much money you are talking about $100-200. A hand wired SF vibrolux will hold it's value or be worth more money in a year then a mass produced printed circuit board amp of today like the HR3.Plus the vibrolux is alot easier to work on vs these modern amps.I mean the SF amps do get a bad reputation but that was the very early ones. And they can be blackfaced pretty easy.Plus i am not liking the quality control at fender for the last few years i think it has been pretty crappy recently

Hi Jon,

Well after considering everyone's opinions and stuff, I decided to pick up a Pro Tube Series Pro Reverb. It had the Fender sound and some features that I wanted (e.g. an effects loop) plus my amp guru is going to mod the od channel so it has better taper and voice it more like a MK I Boogie. I gave it a run at practice this evening and it sounded rather good (even with the standard Fender speaker). So for the moment, I'm covered. However, I still will keep the Vibrolux in mind for the future. Thanks for the input and take care!

Those are actually pretty good amps, Matt. Built stout -- like the Pro Series Twin Amp. You might give some thought to a Celestion V30......

Rawk on!

Hey Arjay,

The V30 actually crossed my mind, as did a RWB. I'm thinking about putting it in a head shell to give my back a break  So it looks like the [current] quest is over.
