ok so i took my champ in for a tuneup. being its new to my hands and a 1968, what could it hurt right? well she got a good much needed cleaning, recapped, and the 3prong power cable added. the guy tells me my 6v6 is weak and needs replaced. hes out of these at the moment and said he will order whatever i would like.
ok arjay and you others, "what would i like" and why lol? what should i put in there?
let me know quick as i gotta call and get my order in in just a few hours.

GTs! IMO you get great, unmatched consistency/quality/guarantee with the GTs. NOS would be great if there was/is a good supply of the same tubes, NOS being first choice if that were the case. Of course the NOS usually costs much more than GTs, and the supply of NOS is running out. 8)

I have both 6L6 and EL84 in 2 different amps, both sets are JJs. First reason I went with them is the name JJ Tesla (huge Nickola Tesla fan). I noticed a HUGE difference as compared to the GTs, the JJs drive a bit harder and have more tolerance to a hot bias. They also bring about some extra harmonics, clears the bottom up some, brings the mids out a bit more, and softens the highs to the point that they are more velvet-y rather than glassy. I would recommend JJs to any and everybody. If you have the option, I would suggest to give a few different MFGs a try and let your ears decide.

Hi BOBROX24,

No such thing as "JJ Tesla", as JJ and Tesla are two completely different companies and tubes. JJ is a budget tube and it is unlike the former Tesla tubes, and the only connection to Tesla is that JJ uses/used some of the old equipment from Tesla, the two companies did not produce the same tubes that JJ produces now. JJ has some preamp tubes that look similar, but that's about as close as the two companies tubes come. Check the JJ site, not once is "JJ Tesla" used. Not saying that they aren't good tubes, just pointing out the misnomer. The old Tesla tubes were much better IMO. :)

Edit:
Oops, sorry! I must have screwed it up trying to be fancy with the link, i think that it works now.

waycool I'm seeing some positive reviews of the Tung-Sol brand reissues, wouldn't hurt at all to try them and it won't be as expensive as NOS 6V6s.
I'm going to buy some to try in my amps that I've been using NOS tubes in,we will see how they sound.

Then I think either the GT or JJ's would be fine....I've never bought new 6V6s,but yeah, any good quality tube will make that amp sing, the very first amp I had was a tweed Champ like Clapton and Duane Allman played through while recording the Layla album,it had that tone.
The Champs remained pretty much unchanged throughout the years,so yours will sound great.

oh very good then. i only quickly sampled it before i bought it just to see if it powered up. the tonal qualitites were really low at that point, so i figured it was tube related somehow. i bought it knowing there just wasnt much that could go wrong with it that wasnt fixable, if anything. got a great deal on it. so i get it back tonight, cleaned, and recapped, and im not doing the tube thing as you see. :)

Make sure you let us know how it went and what the tubes you chose sound like.

I have a 68 Champ that has a NOS RCA 6V6 in and it sounds fantastic and clean on anything below 3 to 4 then above that is gets anice greasey and gritty tone that I love.

For Rebel Soul, yes Clapton used a Tweed Champ on Layle, but Duane used a Princeton, FWIW
