Is there a such thing as GUS (Gear Unloading Syndrome)?

I recently decided that the downsizing I did to my gear collection a couple of years ago was not enough. Today I sold my SF Vibrolux Reverb. I think next on the chopping block will be my bass and bass amp. Then the hard part will come, trying to decide which guitar to sell. I may not sell any guitars, I still haven't decided that. They don't actually have to go according to the criteria I set out for myself last week. Any piece of gear I have not used for a year or more... I mean actually played long enough to reaquaint myself with the gear, not just plug in for a minute or two and move on. For the last 2 years the only time I have powered up the SFVR was if somebody wanted to hear it. I'd play some jazzy chords, do a few fills, mess around with the knobs for a while and shut it down. Mostly I play the Rivera. It's now been out of my possession for 8 hours and surprisingly I feel no emotion whatsoever about selling it. I'm taking that as a good sign.

Just think of how awesome a guitar player you could have been by now if you had only spent the last 10 years practicing instead of obsessing over pickups and roasted maple necks.

If you can live without the stuff, more power to you...I have regretted selling some things but not others.
Years ago when the kids were small and money was tight I had to sell an amp to buy another one, same with guitars. The gear I have now is the best I've owned as a whole, but there have been some really cool things I wish I had back....like a '65 Strat and late '60s Marshall 2x12 combo.

+1

Same here.

I didn't really succumb to "GAS" until after I paid off my mortgage.

Speaking from related experience.... there's nothing wrong with getting to a point that you want to downsize some things.

After 35 years in the hobby, I am selling off my "beloved" comic book collection. 90% of the proceeds go into my SEP IRA.... 10 % into vintage amps.... the wife not happy about the 10%. I have sold some books that were "near and dear" to me.... but I have not missed them one minute. In fact - I am having a blast cataloging and selling the collection. Anyway.... comics are one of those things that sits in a box and you don't read. funny thing.... I love the money more. 8)

About 15 years ago, my dad gave me his bank collection. My boys and I each took a piece we liked - the rest I am trying to sell. I am going to buy a Silvertone 1482 with the proceeds. I need another $80.

The push for me to sell off stuff was the death of my in-laws and my father 1 1/2 years ago. We spent months cleaning out my in-laws house just to have an auction. My wife and I agreed we would not do that to our kids. So now... I show an item to my two boys... "Want this?" "No?" "Good.... I'm selling it" If there is something I think I might enjoy - I keep it.... pretty rare when that happens. Otherwise.... I put $5K in the IRA last year and I am on track to do the same this year. And- with the 10% I held out - I was still able to buy this......

My Vintage 47 Oahu Suitcase Amp and my American Special Tele.. :D

Yes, I've been thinning my collection lately. I figure that the economy in this country may (likely) keep getting worse, and if it tanks, much of what I have collected will be nearly worthless as far as resale value (thanks "NWO" a$$holes!). I'm trying to recoup as much $ as possible before this happens by unloading the stuff that will never increase in value (reinvest in actual physical silver, not on paper). Most gear that is made in USA will likely be worth keeping though. It is still difficult to make the decisions on what to keep and what goes. GUS is more painful than GAS.

Perhaps the price of vintage collectables correlate with the price of gold and silver.

It’s a sellers market for antiques when it’s a buyers market for real estate. And it’s a sellers market for real estate when it’s a buyers market for antiques. Or is it the other way around?

I should start thinning the amp & guitar collections. I've talked with my son about this and he always asks - which guitar are you going to sell first? I don't know. I guess if I sell one, the rest might go easier? I'm 62 this year and the wife and I have decided it's three more years in this big house in town and then out to the country and a one-level ranch (for her knees). How much of the gear to keep..?

Which guitar to sell first? Ah, the pain... The ranch will have a big basement, right..?

I got rid of most of my gear years ago after I got married and tried to settle down. I regretted selling some of it. You can only play so much stuff and the rest just sits doing the slow death thing. Leaving amps and guitars just sit really takes its toll on it.
