Here is one place of many I found using google where you can buy the covering material. Hope that helps some,

Fender used Horse Hyde glue back in the fifties...don't paint it, just use a glue similar to that type (don't think they make that type anymore), and you'll need to spray it with clear lacquer when the cabinet is finished to get that authentic Fender Tweed Look and keep the tweed from get dirty pretty quick (and not in a pretty way).

FWIW

The horse-hide adhesive was extremely toxic (and carcinogenic) and ultimately led to the premature death of Sam Hutton, who was the floor manager for the amp-covering shop at Fullerton for many years.

Most of us doing cabinetry and restorations rely on the red-label DAP contact cement available locally at most hardware stores. Unlike Tolex, there are a number of tricks required to get tweed linen to adhere and align correctly. I've never personally done it but I know several skilled craftsmen who are experts in the field. I can recommend someone with impeccable credentials and very reasonable fees if you want a top-notch restoration.

Best of luck, HTH

It's going to look a lot better than if you do it yourself to use one of the pro's. You just send the empty cab to them.

mergili.com will do a killer re-tweed, probably less than $200.

There are several companys that sell 5f1 kits and they have solid pine cabs with the tweed covering fo under $200. All you got to do is put a finish of your choice on the raw tweed cover.

It's hard to line up and bookmatch the corners while keeping everything straight, way more difficult than vinyl or tolex. By the way the tweed 5f1 was tweed up to 1963, so you can go tolex for the 63-64 look.

But if you can do it well by alll means go for it.

Which is why I refer my clients to an associate over in Denton, Texas -- nobody does tweed better than him and they've never been disappointed.
