For my money 1959-1967 are the best. But circuit wise, lots of choices in that nine year span........... 8) http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Fender_Bassman http://tone-lizard.com/Bassman_Modifications.htm

Depends on your playing style. Any of the Piggy-back up until the mid 70's are great. Gretsch players swear by the blondes of 62-63.
With the right tubes and speakers, they are all great.

I have a 68 silverface bassman and it sounds great. The early silverface ones can be set to blackface specs easily. I have heard that the later 70's heads (bassman 50, bassman 70) don't sound as good and aren't as easy to retrofit, but that could just be rumor.

I paid $200 for my '69 silverface Bassman and $250 for the '68 2-15 cabinet-I think that I did pretty good considering that they make up one bitchin' tone demon.

If everything was close to original on the '65 Bassman,it probably would have been a decent deal.
I don't know that much about the piggyback amps,I've always owned the combos.
The real problem with vintage amps is what has been replaced inside, and you can't always get a peek inside, then you have to really be familiar with what you're looking at.

i just didnt take him up on it because i was chasin a rebel20 in my mind and went with that instead. i goofed i think. i could have gotten the rebel any time.
