I too have a '64 Pro Amp.

It's possible your GZ34 rectifier tube is bad or that one or more of your filter caps has shorted. The bias cap may also be at fault. If you've never had this amp serviced now is the time.

Did it go out before you replaced the 6l6 and did you only replace one.You can try this, pull out the rectifier and output tubes, turn it on and see if it blows a fuse. If ok, replace the rectifier tube and turn it back on and see if it blows a fuse, if it's ok it's not the rectifier then replace one output tube at a time and see if it blows a fuse. Then you have an idea what the problem might be

Remove all your tubes and put a new fuse the right size in power

1- amp ON ; fuse blow ; probably problem in power transformer.
Fuse ok : put the GZ 34

2-Fuse blow ; problem could be the filter capacitor (s) or output transformer or something else or the GZ34
Fuse ok ; put all 12AX7

3- Fuse blow ; could be one 12AX7 or resistors/ caps in 12AX7 circuit(s)
Fuse ok ; put 6L6

4- fuse blow ; one or 2 6L6 defective or bias a way too hot, or output transformer.
fuse ok : amp is ok

I know this may sound silly, but did you pull three large tubes out, when you replaced the two 6L6GC's? Is it possible that the far position large socket, that should have a GZ34/5AR4 rectifier... you tried plugging in one of those new 6L6GC?

Check the link, esp the lower part that has the chassis layout (it's positioned to look from bottom of amp to the top). And see if the tubes are in the correct socket.

HTH!

The pins on a Gz34 and a 6l6 are not the same. They will fit in the socket but it will not power up the amp

Correct. But it's a great way to blow the crap out of an amp.

Which seems to be what's happened with the OP.

One shouldn't own a tube amp and try to fix it themselves with no experience, knowledge or guidance.Ya gotta have deep pockets to own a tube amp anyway but if you blow stuff up like you did it can get really expensive.Get yourself a solid state amp or read some books on amp maintenance but I don't like that either 'cause someone like you will get fried.Extremely dangerous toys these tube amps!I suggest a Line 6 for you.Perfect!

tyguy, you are right when you said tubes amps is dangerous. But I should said only if your opened it, there are lethal voltage inside.

And about solid state amp ; it's another king of amp, not the same as tubes amp

i never opened an amp because theres voltage inside
i just replaced a 6l6 tube and add a 12tax inside a empty socket
i dont know if the problem is back then or now because the amp was shut up for years

i also have a solid state amp peavey vypyr 75 and that amp is incredible have all the effects and have a twin reverb simulator

but my fender is a 1963 64 pro amp
and is a classic i want to play it

Yes keep this classic amp. You are very lucky to have it.

Do you test your amp like I suggest ?
