This is my first post and I am new to the whole forum thing, although I have viewed some in the past and seems like a very knowedgeable bunch of folks on here so on to my question; What would be a good replacement speaker for my '64 Princeton (non reverb)? A little background; the amp has a celestion in it now, it was the only 10 inch speaker I could find back in the early 80's. I would like it to sound more original and I was thinking of a new Jensen P10R, thoughts? :?:

For vintage Princetons and Princeton Reverbs I favor the vintage alnico CTS 10" as used in blackface/silverface-era Super Reverbs. They deliver a punchy, organic warmth that few current-production speakers possess. They're around and can still be had for reasonable prices. For vintage ceramic tone, the original C10R Jensen (not the offshore re-issue) wouldn't be a bad choice. The OEM Oxford usually found in these amps really doesn't do it justice. If you prefer a "new" speaker, the Weber 10A125 (alnico) or 10F125 (ceramic) is probably as good as it gets.

Best of luck, HTH

Arjay

Thanks Arjay...quick response! The weber sounds good and probably what I will go with . I have been on the hunt for a while for a vintage speaker but haven't had much luck locating one. I have a Kendrick in my 68 Champ and I really like the sound of that and wondered what you thought of those?

Thanks again for the advice.

Kendrick built some great speakers, like Reverend. A shame that those companies passed on to the "great here-after".

:(

Kendrick is still kicking, I was just on their website the other day...still selling guitars, amps, speakers, tubes, amp parts, etc., Here is thier link, looks like they build them one at a time in a very small "Factory".

I have a buddy who has the first Texas Crude style 118 model (Tweed Champ)

I have a Princeton 65 ReIssue with the C10R Jensen offshore re-issue. My buddy has a real, honest-to-goodness Blackface Princeton Reverb. A/B'ing the two amps, I hear some difference, but its not a big one. In fact, neither sounds better to me. I sometimes worry about my tonal hearing.

I have since replaced the C10R with a Celestion G10 Greenback. The main tonal difference is rolled off highs. Honestly, I usually connect the Princeton to an extension cabinet with Alnico Blues.

Not a bad combination.

I converted my non-verb Princeton to a piggyback configuration -- the head now drives a pair of 12-inch JBL's.

World's loudest 12-watt amp!

Thanks everyone for all the info and recommendations. I have at least narrowed it down to a Kendrick, a Weber, and a vintage alnico CTS.

Arjay has been very helpful, and is one of the most knowledgeable "Fender Reps" I have ever come across!
