Hey Arjay,

Image

And in the old owner's home...

It won't be in my hands until late April. But here it is. Sorry about the small photo but it came from a cell phone.

Pretty clean! Honestly, I don't think I'd do a thing to it other than install the speakers of your choice (assuming you do not care for what's currently inside).

Rawk on

Some graffitti on the back, That is where I will start. Grill cloth has some small tears and that will be the last to be fixed. As usual, corners have a little corrosion (it's 40 years old) so they might get replaced someday.

Try mineral spirits on the graffiti. Pour a little onto a clean rag (T-shirts work well for this) and rub in tight circles to get down into the texture.

Simichrome or Naval Jelly can often be used to remove oxidation and light corrosion from metal parts -- do not use steel wool or Brillo pads (they'll abrade the nickel plating right off the parts, eventually resulting in serious rust).

Getting OEM grill cloth with the correct weave for a vertically-oriented cab is next to impossible. The repro stuff only comes in 36-inch widths (you'll need a minimum of 40"). I'd leave that cloth alone -- it's better than many old cabs I've seen. As well, the repro cloth's weave pattern is some 30% larger than vintage.

Can't remember what the name of the pasty stuff in the tube was that I used in the 60's and 70's for pits on chrome bumpers. (NO, not toothpaste) That was some good cleaner.

I will try the spirits. Better to just clean if possible and maybe (very lightly) armour all the back. VERY LIGHTLY. And then use dry rag to remove the leftovers.

That is what I have seen 36" width by the yard. So anything larger than MoJo's 2X12 cabinet at 30" would, sadly, be a bit of a pain to find. But a huge score if I could find it.

As far as speakers, depending on what is in there, brand/model, I may replace or recone those. I know that I wasn't lucky enough to get JBL's but hey, this is the cab I was looking for and that is 80% of the battle.
I do see where Fender offers various grill cloths but with no SKUs for ordering. Good luck trying to get some of that, huh?

Description states that they have various colors, but.....

I have seen cabs in much worse shape foing for a lot more.

The "big-box" cabs are not very popular, both because of the logistics involved in loading/transporting them and the fact that they really don't sound that good. The Bassman performs a little better due to the ported baffle but they're more eye-candy than anything else (I know -- I have two of these behemoths).

Once you find out what's inside the box you can figure out where you want to go from there. The stock drivers for that vintage enclosure would be Oxford's or Utah's -- neither of them particularly remarkable, sonically. Celestion V30s do very well with a Bassman head, especially as a quartet.

The V30s would require a new baffle. Hmmmm.

And then there are the Eminence Legend 1518 power 150w 60-4k Hz

or the Eminence CB158 300 watt 47 - 3k Hz. A bit much for a 50watt amp.

Have you had any experience with either of these? I know, you love the D130 but increasingly harder to find.

I really need to think about that new baffle for a quartet. Gonna make it a heavy old girl. But should sound sweet!

Aren't those the two monsters under your two Twins?

My bad, Art......I thought that cab held 12's, not 15's.

In that case, the Emi Legends might be just the ticket. Cedarblues has used one in his "Spankmaster" with excellent results. He knows tone so I'd be inclined to trust his judgement. As to the CB158's, from the specs those look to be dedicated bass drivers. Great for a "P" or a "J" mebbe, but they'll choke a Strat or a Tele (or any other 6-string).

A new 4 x 12 baffle is a legitimate possibility -- I owned such a conversion decades ago. I can walk you through the procedure if you decide to pursue that path (you'll need to have woodworking tools and skills for this). As I mentioned, a quartet of 16-ohm V30's will make your Bassman roar (any amp for that matter)!

Yeah, those are my two boat anchors. I haven't used that "Fillmore" rig in years.

Yeah, the Legends look really nice.
The CB 158s are bass drivers. But nice. I'm thinking the Legends are the way to go. And much lighter. :D

About the same time you stopped playing "without" monitors? (these kids nowdays don't know how easy they have it now.)
We'll all be watching for that "Arjay in Central Park" concert this summer.
