Hey there, gang! This may seem like a no-brainer question, but I need some ammo to talk the wife into it. On one of my local Craigslists there's a guy selling a '70's Kustom sparkle tuck'n'roll 2x15 cab with a pair of E/V SRO 15's installed. Claims it was his Dad's who quit playing back in the seventies, and it's been sitting in his basement for the last 30+ years. Don't want to let the cat out, but he's asking barely three figures for it. I've heard tell that the vintage SRO 15's are a holy grail of American speakers. Any thoughts on this one? I know a 2x15 is probably more cab than anyone really needs these days, but that tuck'n'roll covered stuff is getting collectible, and the speakers alone have to be worth considerably more than what he's asking. I'm thinking of snapping it up just for the speaks, and selling off the cab to cover expenses. Since I've only seen info listing these E/V's as being 8ohm speakers, I'm thinking I could buy/build a pair of 1x15 cabs and chain'em to match impedances with my DSR. Any suggestions that may help spur on the argument with my better half? Thanks, O.

"Barely three bills" for a pair of EV-SRO15's is a bargain in anybody's book! Be advised though -- they are HEAVY. The 15-incher weighs about eight pounds more than a JBL D130F. Decades ago I had an SRO15 in a home-made Showman tone-ring cab that I drove with a '66 Bassman head. It positively sang!

Best of luck with the wife......

Thanks, Arjay, that's more fuel for the fire in the battle of the sexes and their conflicting hobbies. As a side note, I've read on some forums that it is possible to change speaker impedance- there are people out there who offer to do so, and online speaker re-cone kit sites frequently list this as an option. Is this truly a possibility, and if so what all is involved? Thanks for any help! O.

The only practical way to change a speaker's impedance is with a full re-cone.

About $160 a pop for those SRO's.

Tell your wife that you could sell that cabinet alone for at least $200 or even more and the speakers are worth far more than that,I wouldn't hazard a guess but he is asking far far less than the total worth of the unit.

I recently picked up an EV SRO 15 (original cone) from ebay for $75... IMO it's the best sounding speaker in my DRRI! But as Arjay mentioned, it is way too heavy.
