Yup.

Some wines do not taste good when new, but after a few years will taste wonderful...until they're past their peak.

Contrast that with Scotch. If you have an 18 year old single malt, it will always be an 18 year old single malt, no matter how many years you keep it in a glass bottle.

This bottle comes out only on very special occasions (note the date on the seal).

Same with Jack Daniel's Sour Mash,my brother in law gave me an unopened bottle in a special tin box with a deck of cards,it was around 10/15 years old so I just had to drink it.
There was no difference in taste compared to a new bottle..I have since learned that it continues to age in the barrels, but stops when bottled.

No!The parts get old just like myself.A fifty year old transformer(lots of 'em are rotten inside)isn't going to sound the same as it did when new. Most people will say the 50 yr old one is better but there's no opinion to be had really as unfortunately, there's no way to A/B them as the old/new parts can never exist in the same universe(time).Voltages are higher now(120 plus)which makes the old 110V amps sound better but that's not the parts.I don't want old rotten caps(they'll burn up your PT,tubes and rectifier and maybe catch fire)and speakers(if your original spkrs work put them away, cause if you don't you'll blow them)in my amps. It's the transformers, tubes and speakers that make them sound good.Just use the best parts you can afford and you'll be happy.

From my experience just about any amp inproves especially after being played-in. My new Blues Jr. sounds much better now than it did when I bought it a year ago.My old '69 Bassman with the '68 2-15 cabinet is one of the best guitar amps I've ever played through and it keeps getting better dispite the fact that I haven't done anything with it but play through it for the 10 years I've owned it.I dread for the day to come when I may have to replace a tube as I'm so afraid that it'll have a detrimental effect on the tone.

+1

Buying......

(but I'm not "putting my speakers away" because they're original JBL's and an integral component of my tone)

+1 Yes,I've got an old Orange Label Fender JBL(alnico)in my 65 DR that I bought reconed in 1975.I think it's time for another recone and i'm installing a CelestionGH12(it's downstairs and that's probably not right #).JBL"s are great in a Twin Reverb(that's what I used in the '70's playing standards and disco)or even better in a Standel for a clean country 70's tone(today's country has more distortion))but don't take distortion very well.I think I'll like the Celestion better as I have Merc.Mag Axioms in my DR and it sounds as Marshally as Fendery anyway. Yeah......everybody knows that every note that Duane Allman, Sam Andrews, John Cippolina, Jorma Kaukonen, Albert Collins, Chuck Berry, etc ever played sounded sour.

Hey! I just tasted my 13-year-old HRDlx and it was salty. Does that count as seasoned? It does sound sweet! I tried the same thing with the firewood that I got last year, but it just tasted like dirt. I am disappointed, as they told me that the wood was seasoned. :(

Thats funny....I had a 1969 bottle of Crown abou 4 years ago. I recieved it from our receptionist. Said her husband had a case in the basement and was giving it away. Me and a bud killed it one night while watching a NY Giants football game. Bought a current bottle a few days later. Not much dif at all. Maybe a the 69 was a little mellower.

As far as the amp aging into to somethng great...
My 2 cents is after initial breakin of the speakers you will know or not if you like the amp or it sounnds good. A crappy amp wll sound crappy 50 years from now and a toneful amp will sound sound toneful 50 years from now baring any component issues. NOt saying components dont drift in value because they do but a crappy amp wont sound great in 50 just because its old.
