I don’t know if this is the appropriate forum to post this.
Anyway, with the prices of Princeton Reverb Reissues going over the $800 mark, would it be better to get a Silverface Princeton Reverb for the same price?

Reason I ask is, if the SFPR is all original and in excellent condition, it will cost around the same as the reissue. And, there are a ton of them out there. In addition, the transformers, caps, cap can, tubes, some resistors, and Oxford speaker will need replacing which is about $250- $300 more for a DIY.

But with the prices going up on the Blackface to exuberant levels, I feel the early Silverface Princeton Reverbs will be harder to find when their price goes up.

My money would go to the silverface.

Didn't CBS pretty much leave the Princtons alone? So, they are basically the same amp.

Thanks for the input.

The search for Silverface Princeton Reverb continues.

I've bought several SF PR (1970-79 era, AA 1164) and one pseuco BF 1980 (I think---with the B1270 circuit). You upgrade the lytics, maybe new speaker and the darn thing sounds "pretty" close to my 1965 PR.

One thing I've found... is the later PR with the particle board and velcro attached speaker frame sound a WHOLE lot better in a plywood cab. Like the type made by JD Newell.

I really like the PR with the 5U4GB rectifiers. Invert in a good one. NOS US made one are still relatively inexpensive. Esp compared to that crazy GZ34 in my AA764 circuit.

so little changed on the Champ and Princeton/Princeton reverb that why not get a later silverface? As long as you don't use the horrible pullboost it sounds fine, and with TLC and updating out of spec caps, will sound fine.

I'm saving up for brown faces and tweeds now.

Better still in a true-spec finger-jointed solid pine cab.

Good enough for Leo, good enough for me!

Thanks everyone for the information. I do agree with all of you, the way to go for me too is the earliest Silverface I could find in decent shape. The 1974 Silverface I played last week got a hold of me. It sounds great at low to moderate volumes, and that's what I had intended it for (home use). My 18 watt 5e3 clone will be for jam sessions. It has all original RCA tubes, Oxford speakers, transformers and possibly the can cap (a Mallory), I don't know if that's original.
Anyway, thanks again for your help.

Sincerely,
a very Happy Camper.

I've noticed that the SF Princetons I've seen had Mallory cap cans. 20/20/20/20 at 450 VDC rated at 85ºC. So prolly original.

I hate that rust/orange cloth......it reminds me of those wretched Zodiacs.

(easy enough to change though)

Thanks again everyone for the info and comments. I posted this similar Poll on the modern ams section and the results were very different (perhaps not enough sample).

Also, no mods scheduled in the near future, unless something breaks down.
