I check out http://www.shopgoodwill.com at least once or twice a week. You never know what you'll find. If something peaks my interest, I'll bid on it half-hearted. I did get an old 1970 Sears and Roebuck S1209 stella guitar from there. The first guitar I had was a S1209 - sentimental purchase.

Anyway... I am always surprised what I'll find.

A blackface Fender Princeton amp that needs some real TLC
Its a good thing they haven't tested it.

The repair and rescue of this amp is clearly outside of my realm.... and bidding seems high for something that is going to need a lot of work. Current high bid is $328.

The price (thus far) isn't that stiff. Of course, the bidding has yet to top out.

I could save it, no problem.

I was wondering how far gone the amp could be before its rescued. Of course, worst case scenario it could be used for parts.

It's time like this I wish I'd have take few industrial arts classes in high school.

I'll try to track it and and see what it finally sells for. Interestingly enough, the goodwill auctions don't really get too heated until the last hour.... and even then it might only be two people. I let a 60's Silvertone archtop acoustic get away from me for $111 about two weeks ago. That was just stupid on my part.

You have a photo of the circuit area? I get this perverted thrill looking under the hood. And it could tell you something about how much work is potentially involved.

Thanks!

Kinda goes without saying.

The question for me is where the limit would be when an amp might be best used for parts than rebuilding with new components. Its a gamble as to what's let under the hood.

I doubt that Goodwill is going to pull the chassis and photograph it, but the photo of the back shows a lot of spaghetti. :(

Its amazing the stuff that people take to Goodwill. To me.... this amp is one of them. You'd think you could post it on CL or ebay and get a couple bills out of it yourself.

But on the other hand.... kudos to the donor. Goodwill will get good cash for this...... and have only invested the time to post it on their auction site.

Another case in point.... a 1924 Deering VEGA Bango. I know nothing about bangos, but its impressive that someone brought this to Goodwill. Current bid = $470

From looking at the condition. i would say mechanically it would at least need a cap job power cord and a new grill and probably new tubes, with out seeing it i could guess about $500 more if you DIY. If you pick it up cheap i would go for it.Since most of these in my area are going for about $2400.I mean these thing will always go up in value.

While the selling history at the Fender Field Guide has not been updated since late last year.... I more inclined to think a Blackface Princeton is closer to $800 collector to collector. And unless its super clean - the vintage dealers seem to want around $1,000 for a Princeton.

If I were an experienced amp restorer like others on the forum, I would consider it for the current price. But I am not...... if fact I'd be more likely to solder the transformer to my wedding ring by accident .... so its out of my range at the current bid.

I was looking at this potential buy on Ebay. Vibrato doesn't work, but everything else looks stock and pretty good shape. Fixing vibrato shouldn't be too much trouble (famous last words). But, circuit board looks clean and un-popped (the best to buy---a virgin).

Boy, if you could get it for under $800...

The brownface 6G5 has the tube-driven "harmonic" trem. Likely, it's a tube problem.

Sold for $443

You have to assume whoever bought it has the skills to restore it.... or the $$$$

Who knows... maybe it will show up on Indy's Craigslist in the next month or so. :D

I saw a relatively clean early '65 no-logo Princeton on Ebay last night with a BIN price of $699.

$443 for that wreck is no bargain.

My thoughts exactly. Too many other amps in working condition for reasonable prices.
