Water or ethylene-glycol?

Water. 12 PA tubes with 21.5kv B+. The lower power version had only 4 PA tubes. You actually had room to walk around in these (when pwered down.) Had 4 radiators about 6 feeet square behind the transmitter building (for the two transmitters.) Really needed to be more of an electrician/plumber to work on these things due to all the control circuitry. Signal path on these transmitters was pretty much straight forward. AN/FPN -44/45/46 Loran. Nice 1350 foot tower for an antenna.

As I remember, it was the huge annode of these PA tubes that were immersed in the water. Everything else on top of that sort of looked like an upside down udder. Sort of like these Image As far as I know, they are just AN/FPN-44/45 PA Tubes.

I'm sure they had a number designation though. The glove on the upper shelf can be used for scale.

About the same physical size as the Klystron in an AN/FPS-6A height finder radar.

Ever hafta climb the tower to change out the anti-collision beacons?

We actually had painters flown in once a year to paint the tower. The Electricians Mate got to pack his lunch and climb the tower with an ET and change out all the beacons during the same week.

Yeah, the guy lines had 6 foot ceramic insulators. I could work on these things but still would rather keep my hands "out" of a vintage guitar amp.

At Iwo Jima we had the AN/FPN-45 xmtr and 46 timer (which is where I spent most of my time) In Shetland, we were a monitor station so just timers on site.

Here is a good site to look at some PDFs of the xmtr components. http://www.loran-history.info/CG_Docume ... uments.htm

Pretty interesting read, Art.

A pity that the Itasca didn't have gear like that back in July of 1937......

The Itasca? Would have sunk the old girl I think. I don't even think Loran A was around until the 40's. But I think Amelia would have appreciated any kind of navaigational help.

+1

Nothing but rudimentary ADF down in the HF band back then.

Of course if Itasca's batteries hadn't run down during the previous night......

I used the GT-6L6GE's in my SFTR for several years. I found them to be a very durable power tube, so durable in fact that I only replaced two sets in the eight years of using them prior to the amp's theft. I don't pretend to be a tube expert, but I thought they were a vast improvement over the Chinese tubes that were in the amp when I bought it in the early eighties-very clean and clear, seemed to fit the Twin well. I currently use the Electro-Harmonix 6L6EH's which I like also, and it's a bonus that they are widely available and pretty reasonably priced by comparison.

I was thinking this afternoon. Good thing Marty McFly didn't have a set of these in "Back To The Future" or they would have been cleaning him off the wall with a sponge.

+1!

I'm certain they're rated well in excess of 1.21 jigga-watts.

The guy across the street from us when we were kids worked for GE as a TV Repairman. He used to keep my Vibrolux Reverb in top shape. We had drugstores within walking distance with tube testers. The guy behind the counter showed me how to use it when I was 12 years old LOL. Now OSHA and the EPA would be involved.

The last time I tested tubes in a drugstore was around 1977,I'm surprised the testers were still around at that time,I can remember that date because I bought a new '77 Les Paul Custom, and I was testing tubes for a Marshall 2x12 combo that I had bought about a year earlier...back then it took me a long time to come up with the cash to buy guitars and amps, most of the time I only had one of each.

I think the same time the tube testers went away, those really cool (mostly accurate) tire/air pressure gauge/dispenser went away. All you had to do was dial in the pressure you wanted, and that is what you got. Now days, they usually suck the air out of your tire. :?
