I was using the master volume as an example of the silly things that happened to the later SF amps in general, not the DR specifically. So really any of the SFDR's can be modded to BF specs?

Honestly I don't know about all the SFDRs,Arjay will know, but CBS started messing with things around '69 or so and then it just got more messed up,the smaller amps were left alone more so than the "professional models"...but components changed like coated wire and caps here and there that weren't in the BFs,I just haven't owned anything "vintage" later than '67,so I'm not the best source of advice here.
It really would be best to get the earliest SFDR you could find...imho.

I don't think the DR ever came with a master volume. The later ones had a pull boost. If the boost is not pulled out it does not effect the circuit. You can get late 70's SF cheaper and do the mods to it.

+1

However, the prices are climbing steadily on these SF DR's now that the "secret" is out. Grab one while you can still afford it.

Actually, the blasphemy done to the Deluxe Reverb began in August of 1968 with the AB868 circuit revision. The offending added components are easily removed but FMI had switched over to neoprene-jacketed wire by then and lead dress itself was something that floor managers were apparently not too concerned with. They're still good amps......but less so than original AB763's.

I think that I tend to forget that to a person who hasn't experienced the lush tones of those BF amps, stuff like neoprene coated wire and lead dress doesn't matter.
But to us Arjay, you hit the nail squarely on the head,it was blasphemy...and if I looked inside the chassis of one of those amps,it would make me feel bad....but a good tech could make it right.
BTW,how's that BF Pro sounding?... that 15" sends chills up your spine I'll bet. :D

Honestly, I've got a bunch of irons in the fire right now and haven't had much of an opportunity to mess with the Pro Amp yet. I did play it at our New Year's weekend gig, in tandem with my '65 Princeton Reverb -- sounded as smooth as a prom queen's thighs (and not nearly as risky).

I'm just now wrapping up the electronic overhaul of my '67 Showman amp (caps, some resistors, new glass, bias job, etc). Plus we bought a new shed (outbuilding) for the backyard and I'm building a small bench and shop area into one side of it......the mother of all "honey-do's".

Arjay,

I see you have what looks like a blonde Deluxe Reverb in the pic you posted in the bassman speaker cab thread. Is that a reissue? Do you gig with it much? What sort of volume settings do you use with a drummer? Looking for something more portable than my '67 Bassman + cab to play with my loud drummer, and there is one for sale locally.

Yes, it's a re-issue chassis installed into a taller cab custom-built to accommodate a 15-inch speaker......

Image

I've modified the circuit by performing the "Fritz Mod", which makes the reverb and trem accessible on both channels and also puts the channels "in phase" with one another. I also installed a new output tranny with dual secondaries (4 and 8 ohm) then wired the leads to the dummy polarity switch on the rear panel (newer re-issues no longer have this switch). In this manner I can safely run a second 8-ohm load.

It does quite well even in medium-to-large club settings though we do mic all of our amps in the bigger venues. I've yet to have a drummer drown me out and I routinely set my channel volumes to "5" or "6". I frequently run this amp in tandem with the brown "Pro" clone shown in the photo for simulated stereo effects.

HTH

Hi I have a drri and its been my main amp for more than five years gigs jams with mates and on problems at all.. changed tubes to nos pre amp and tung sol 6v6 ri power tubes and it sounds tops to me and my mates and the punters out front. these are top amps pcb or not. i have a 1980s fender 75 tube amp handwired and its great to big sound but its so f...kin heavy to drag around. so thats why i got the drri lite and top tone to just turn her up to six or more and run from your guitars volume control, nice stuff these fender amps.Cheers from aus.
