Champ or Vibro Champ -- blackface or silver. Use your favorite OD pedal to heat things up.

If the real Champs are out of your price range the VHT Special 6 is pretty nice, hand wired too and cheap as dirt.

Champ.

Good enough for Clapton, ZZ Top, etc... if a Champ cranked doesn't give you enough overdrive, then you should go the pedal route.

I see that the prices are all over the place with these amps what should I expect to by for a vibro champ?

I've seen them listed for anywhere between $275 and $750, contingent upon condition and originality, blackface or silverface, etc. Non-vibro Champ models seem to be the bargain right now -- sometimes going for $250 or less.

If your talking a lot of OD than a pedal will help just about any amp. But for recording just straight guitar, perhaps the effects can be added in the mix after the recording. That way you can put in compression and other effects to get the sound more defined. But for live recording, perhaps a cranked up tube amp with clarity and less mids.

  The Deville is a low watt amp. I like this guy!! Plus I always wanted to punch a few mexi-fries myself.

Just think of how awesome a guitar player you could have been by now if you had only spent the last 10 years practicing instead of obsessing over pickups and roasted maple necks.
