just traded for a princeton reverb the other day. really, my dream amp is finally mine! thing is, the guy swapped out the eminence copperhead speaker for the stock one to even the trade. while the amp still sounds fantastic to my ears with the stock speaker, i know that a replacement can make all the difference in the world. so i thought i'd pose the question here: what type of replacement speaker would work best for someone who like a lot of headroom and is looking for a mellow, curtis mayfield/pops staples kinda sound?

I have Weber speakers in all my amps, and they sound great to me,I have both ceramic and alnico magnet speakers depending on the amp....I would put a ceramic speaker in that amp but I don't know much about 1979 models,Arjay will be along soon...he will give some nice input.
Check them out,and others here will give you some other suggestions, one thing several of us agree on is that the Jensen Reissues aren't that great....but then there are some who like them,it's all subjective.

Which "stock" speaker does your amp have? Fender has used many different vendors for its OEM components. I personally favor the CTS alnico for all 10-inch applications -- my '65 Princeton Reverb probably came stock with an Oxford 10J5 or a Jensen C10S but it now has a Fender-labeled CTS alnico that originally belonged to a '67 Super Reverb. It sounds awesome.

not sure how to identify the speaker. it is of the standard fender blue label variety. i'll have to look into the weber's!

Look for numbers stamped on the speaker frame or magnet.

What numbers are you seeing on the speaker?

I read that 137 on the speaker which I read identifies it as a CTS?

Correct -- an EIA code of "137-XXXX" identifies the driver as a CTS.

If the magnet looks like this, it's a permanent rare-earth type (ie: alnico)......

OTOH if the structure is round, it's a ceramic magnet.

I like that speaker Arjay, and I see what you mean about that PR being a long lost brother to the DR I just bought, there's only about three months difference in them at most...love it!

And they're both close relatives of my NK-stamped '64 Pro Amp.

I really like the old CTS alnico ten's......very similar in vibe and timbre to the Weber 10A125. The contemporary Emi's and Celestions may be louder (ie: more efficient) but they lack the soul and vibe of true '60s-era speakers. And purist that I am, I wanna see that blue-and-silver Fender label on the magnet.
