I've seen '57 Twin Amp re-issues going for $1500 on Ebay. What's your problem?

It's fairly well documented that Clapton (and many others) used a tweed Champ amp. Small watt amps are very popular for recording. JImmy Page supposedly used an old 5 watt Supro amp (Valco's version of a champ) on the early Zep albums.

There are enough amp builders on this site who will tell you that you can build a Champ (5F1 circuit) from a kit. Weber kits seems to be very popular

You can also find vintage tweed champ amps for $800-$1,000 on the vintage market.

Unless you are talking about his Live sound in D & T D...then he was using BF Showman Amps with various Fender and Marshall cabs. Of course your going to need Gods fingers too!

There are twins and there are twins. To make a short story long, you could get a decent vintage era tweed twin to specs or a modified one from people who build kits, clones, and replicas new or used. If you have the skills, you could build a tweed twin or evil twin or low-power twin for well under $2000. You can get custom cabinets for your choice of speaker arrangement, and you can decide what kind of transformers and components you want in the amp. You are free to create the amp of your liking. Best part is it you can work the amp hard without fear of damaging a vintage amp. Parts are abundant for repairs.

Custom all the way.

Here's an exact amp Clapton used from Cornell Amplifiers for a time in the late 90s.
The Custom 80 (aka "Eric's Amp")
http://www.dc-developments.com/cornell_custom_80.htm

If you're in the U.S. then you're probably out of luck finding one on the cheap but it's neat to see what all Slowhand had done to his. (Only tone controls seem to be treble and bass (presumably he can control the mids adequately with his midboost installed in the guitar), Tone Tubby Alnico speakers for added "response," etc.).

If you are looking for a lower wattage variant I've been suggested the Tweed Deluxe (5e3 circuit).

If you are looking for the D & D Layla sound, it's the 57 Champ as previously mentioned. I have a Clapton Strat and I am pleased with the tone from the Champion 600 as well. I would think you'd be able to get very close to that will some basic upgrades to that $149 amp.
