I'm looking for a good alnico replacement speaker for my DRRI. Can anyone recommend me a speaker from for example Eminence? Webers availability is really poor in my country, but I could get almost any Eminence or Celestion for a quite fair price.

I now have in Eminence Legend V128. It's ok but rather dull and it has power rating of 120watts, which is way too much in my opinion for that amp. Something around 50 or maybe less would be ok. I'd like the speaker to be pushed more.

I'd appreciate any suggestions. I really trust on Eminence these days, but I'd like to hear different comments, opinions and preferences. Thanks!

Try Celestion's alnico Gold. Pricey but worth the price of a ticket IMO.

It's not an Eminence, but in my "clones", I used the Jensen Alnico speakers, yeah modern ones made in Italy.

And it sounded very good.

Thanks for the answers this far guys!

What do you think about relibiality and overall quality of modern Jensens? I've heard they've had some serious problems with their products quality for several years now. Has it always been that way? According to one amp tech the stock speaker in my DRRI (Jensen) had also some factory faults in it and had to be replaced. I bought it second hand so I couldn't use warranty.

I own a dozen Fender amps -- nine vintage, two re-issue, one "modern" (solid-state). Only one has a Jensen speaker and it's a 1964 Pro Amp, with a 1965 Jensen Concert Series 15. It sounds beautiful!

I think the contemporary imported Jensens stink.

Thanks for suggestions! I bought a second hand, 10-20 hours played Celestion Gold alnico. After some testing I'm really pleased with it and I think it's a huge improvement. With less sensitivity it's not as loud as eminence and it means I get some 6V6 grit out of the amp more easily. It has more Hendrix- kind of character to it, nice mid range. High end is also now smoother and the overall sound warmer. It feels really well balanced speaker for this amp and my purposes.

I can't wait to play with it on stage where the whole truth will be revealed. It was really expensive, even second hand, but as you said Arjay, I think it's really worth the buck! :D

For those who are about to buy a speaker that has only four mounting holes you may have to do some mods for your DRRI speaker panel since the originals come with 8 holes and screws. I managed to pull 2 extra screws out but I had to cut 2 screws in half with Dremel because I didn't want to mess with the grill gloth.

I'm glad the alnico Gold worked out for you!

And with 10 to 20 hours already on the clock, the speaker is probably fully broken-in and ready to rumble. Let us know how it does in a stage environment.

RAWK ON!

The Gold will only get better! It took me at least 30 hours to fully break it in, so keep playing it or do like I like I do and leave your stereo hooked up to it for a couple days, at moderate volume... the tone will get sweeter and sweeter, specially the highs.

I had to do the same with the screws, only managed to remove 2 and had to cut the other 2.

Now I've played two gigs with my new speaker and I am really, really pleased especially with clean sounds and playing feel. I miked my DR with Sennheiser E606 on last gig and the sound guy also told me it was great. Overall very Fender sounding, clean, clear and fresh. He only had to roll down the top end a little, said it was typically a bit bright, but didn't need much of equalization.

I noticed that my I don't propably need a compressor anymore on gigs to get that kind country clean for examble with brigde pu. I tried compressor on the gig but I think it acted kind of strange, at least different than before. Maybe this has something to do with the natural compression of the alnico speaker and well of course the tube rectifier of DR.

Overdrive and distortion pedals work really fine with Gold, but I really enjoyed the sound of overdrive (MI Audio Tube Zone) driven with HBE treble booster on solos. Result was Brian May-ish lead tone, but maybe a hint more aggressive and grittier. A lot better than with the last speaker I had. Now I'm searching for a good lead distortion pedal. I've been thinking of MI Audio Crunch Box Distortion since I love the company's Tube Zone and sound samples around internet sound very nice. I need a kind of medium to high gain, middley, singing lead distortion which is also suitable for comping. Those things seem surprisingly rare in general.

I'm glad to hear that speaker swap worked out for you! The alnico will add some natural compression to the overall tone, in conjunction with the normal rectifier sag when the amp is driven hard. The Crunch Box should deliver the serious OD vibe but you might give the Bad Monkey a try as well. They seem to favor the lower-powered Fender Combos. They're a bit less expensive as well.

Rawk on!
