I currcurrently own a '06 blues deluxe and it sounds great but I am planning on buying a bassman or bandmaster head and speaker cab. My question is what is the difference between them and what the difference between black face and silver face ambs ? the bassmans sound great my brother-in-law has a all orignal one (unknown year silverface) and I have heard them at local blues jams but I never heard a bandmaster.

I used to own a '65 bassman and I still think it's one of the best guitar amps out there. At that same time, my friend had a silverface bandmaster, and the bassman sounded much better. It's hard to explain exactly the difference but the blackface bassman had more punch and more sparkle than the bandmaster, and very pleasing tube distortion without cranking it too loud. I would seriously recommend spending a few hundred more for the blackface bassman, you won't regret it.

I had a 74 SF Bandmaster and I wish I still had it. It was a reliable and great sounding. Bassmans are great too. It just depends on what you hear.
Good Luck

well the bassman's are great and all BUT if you heard the ghastly ones they use i think a 62 bandmaster and the vibrato is top notch and i would say buy the bandmaster But thats what i think but just telling you, but i would buy the bandmaster.

Howdy. I have an old 1960 Bassman. I wouldn't trade it for nothin. It is still awesome. I play an original 62 Jazz bass through it and a 66 Mustang Bass, and just recently restored a 76 Musicmaster Bass. They all sound great with the old Bassman. I have only played through a bandmaster once. I like it okay, but the old bassman still rocks.......JJ

Either way you will have a smokin' amp for sure. I had an original Bassman and it was amazing with light overdrive pedals. it can easily get you to dumble-land.

Bandmasters are rockin amps too, love their strong midrange presence.

Keep us posted on what you get & how it works out.

I had a '63 Bandmaster when I was in high school, but unfortunately that was back when the thing was the highly overdriven Marshall sound so I didn't appreciate the subtle tube distortion of the Bandmaster, and I sold it for $300 after I got married. <kicks self>

I loved it. It was blonde tolex, black face.

GENERALLY The Silverface should be less expensive than the Blackface (or older). GENERALLY I think the Blackfaced amps are warmer. A good tech can do a (reversable) Mod to the silverface to mimic the Blackface. I stress GENERALLY because everyone has different tastes. Google the Fender Amp Field Guide for all the techie stuff. I believe the 1967s had the Blackface circuitry, but it's hard to pin down dates.
If you get a good deal you can always tweak the tone with Mods, switching or removing components, and changing speakers. If I came across a deal on a 60s Silverface, I'd jump on it! (Huge 'coolness factor', too)

I think I'd try both out if possible, but I heard a rumor that Marshalls were first copied after the bassman because of the great smooth tone when distorted. Am I wrong? The only amp I'd rather have (for completely different reasons) is a 60s model Silvertone twin twelve with tremolo and reverb! Tell me if I'm off the mark? :? :)

Don't know Silvertones, sorry! Sounds sweet, though. I always heard that you couldn't get Fenders in the UK back then, so Marshall cloned one.

Your right. Jim Marshall ran with the Bassman circuit . 8) Mike

I just got my hands on a vintage Fender Bandmaster Reverb TFL 5005D and would like to know if someone out there is interested in making me an offer. I still works great but does have the typical nicks and dings on the front control plate and one small hole in the front fabric.
I can send some digital pictures if you are serious. I do not have the speaker cabinet however but play it through some headphones. If you have a decent cabinet, this thing rocks and has that old time vacuum tube sound.......incredibly mellow.
I will consider your offer if you e-mail me at geocheese1@yahoo.com. Let's talk!!!
