Hello All,

I have just bought a 1967 Silverface AB165 circuit Bassman head. The person I bought it from said the power transformer had been replaced with one from 1974. I am wondering if they are correct because the serial numbers from the transformers are "606 416" and "606-7-33". I don't know which one is the power and which one is the output so I am giving you both. From the research I have done the "606 416" should be 16th week of 1964 and "606-7-33" should be 33rd week of 1967. I can't seem to find any info on dating transformers from the 1970's. What do you guys think? Would it be strange to have a 1964 transformer in a 1967 amp? Am I mistaken about the dates?

Thanks for your help!

I got a drip edge 67 Bassman around thanksgiving. I have cracked it open and I think (though its a very uneducated guess) that the power transformer is the large black one that lays more flat and is behind the output tubes (the big tubes). I think the OT is the large silver one that hangs down lower and is more in the middle of the chassis. Mine is numbered 606xxx. The PT is near where the power comes in and the OT is closer to where the speaker outputs are. My PT serial is 606 xxx. There is a smaller silver thing in between that looks like a transformer (choke maybe?) that has the 606-x-xx serial number.

I think there is one more transformer serial number you need to find and see if that's the replacement.

How do you like the head? Is it loud enough for you? I had to get an attenuator to keep the paint form chipping off my walls.

Unfortunatley I don't have it yet. I got the serial numbers from pictures. I have had the chance to use one before though and loved it.

I'll have to take a closer look when I have it in my hands. I'd still like to know how to date a transformer from the 1970's if anyone can tell me how.

Thanks,

I went back and looked at the pictures again and there seems to be another 606 number I didn't notice before. I know the 606 indicates Schumacher transformers and chokes.

The new one is 606737.

The only way that tranny marked "606 416" dates to '64 is if it has a Fender part # formatted as "125XXX" stamped adjacent to the EIA manufacturer's code. All Fender trannies produced after the supply of parts purchased on behalf of the Fender Electric Instrument Company were marked by a new Fender Musical Instruments (ie: FMI-CBS) coding system for parts whose digits began "022XXX". Thus, if your 606-416 tranny has an FMI part # beginning with "022", it dates to the 16th week of 1974.
