obviously that claim adds nothing to the value without documentation BUT that is an historic amp very rare to find in any condition much less as original as this one.

It needs some serious TLC and a cap job to bring it back to factory spec I'm sure. It's only worth what someone is willing to pay for it.

Obviously, it's 62 years old, which is where it's value lies. You can't have it both ways!

As to your second observation: gee, that applies to everything on the planet!

My point is Dan, as interesting as the amp is and it is a part of Fender history, if you intend to use this amp, it needs some serious work.
It's age is not the only place it's value lies. It is its general condition both cosmetically and electronically. It will no longer be original and will sound different as in probably better brought back up to spec. The amp is "working" but not in "excellent working condition". It seems to have never had any routine maintenance done to it and 62 year old capacitors can be dangerous to not only the player but the amp itself. Do I note a little sarcasm in your post?

i'd much rather buy an amp that is all original and needs work than one which has been indifferently serviced..

Nobody is selling minty 1948 Super v-front amps with miraculously perfect original caps at any price. If you want one, you take what comes along and deal with it as best you can.

Anybody that knows anything about vintage amps already knows that...so are you going to buy it?

No, I don't generally advertise for competing bids. I thought some worthy party here might want it, or just be interested in seeing it for what it is.

The V-front Super is somewhat unique in that it uses two output trannies, one for each speaker. Each tranny is mounted to its speaker via a special bracket which makes the speakers look for all the world like field-coil types. I know of no source for these obscure trannies should one fail. Thus, the V-front Super really isn't a good choice for a gigging amp due to its logistic non-supportability. It's a great conversation piece though.

Some say they're good for a lot more than conversation, Arjay - Billy Gibbons apparently collects this model, and some trusted folks have told me so, too. Musical conversation!

While Mr. Gibbons may collect V-Front Supers, I highly doubt that you will find him playing through one at the next ZZ Top concert you attend. That doesn't mean he might not use one in the studio, but the rarity of replacement parts is going to keep these amps from being used on a regular basis for gigging.

These older amps would not be able to take the strain of being bashed around from venue to venue. Eventually you would have to replace parts and the amp tech would eventually have to start using modern components, which would change the tone produced by the amp. Then the amp is basically no longer a V-Front Super.... its a modern amp in a V-Front Super cabinet.

While someone like Mr. Gibbons may have the financial means to have the old trannies reverse engineered or rebuilt/rewound, most collectors wouldn't even know the resources to contact to have that type of work accomplished. Hence, these older amps with their rather rare and unusual parts are more for conversation than gigging. Which was the point being made earlier in the thread.

Thanks, PF -- that is precisely my point.

And by "conversation piece" I don't necessarily mean merely static decor for a music room. All amps should be played, even if only occasionally. But I wouldn't be dragging something like a V-front Super around to gigs. If it offerred a peculiarily-unique tone it might periodically see some studio use but relics of extreme historical significance (and frailty) have no practical use night after night on a stage.
