Hey guys, I've been looking into building a Tweed Deluxe style amp for a while now. There are so many choices out there, but also considering doing it from scratch. Weber seems to be a good place to start. Also looked into the MOJO and Tube Depot. They are much more expensive. I want a good 12" and I was considering adding a reverb as well. Any thoughts?

Look in the modern amps forum and look at snowy's build of a 5E3,he shows pics and it looks great.
I am thinking of building one or maybe a Tweed Super from Weber,looks like it could be intricate work but I think I could handle it...a 5E3 shouldn't be too much trouble....but then again I might be pulling my hair out over it. :)

VOXamp, the 5e3 is a great build. You can purchase the kits without the speaker for less and get a alnico speaker of your choice for a better sounding amp.

Yep, I'm all about a good Alnico. I've heard people complain about how the new reissue Jensen's don't sound as good as the old ones, but I personally like them better than almost anything else that I've heard.

I've built several early 5A3 circuit Deluxe's. In this amp, I used either a Angela premade chassis or one by Toress (?). Try to find correct aftermarket breadboard (with capacitance value close to OEM). Friend did ALL of the cabinentry work. This is one killer amp. Kinda like a Champ on steroids, but still has that smooth "buttery" overdrive missing in later push-push BF and SF, DR & PR... which run fixed bias.

If you are interested from pure DIY: Angela makes 5E5 chassis already punched.

Voxamp dude, If you like the new Jensen sound the Tube depot 5e3 Kit has the same power trans as the deluxe reverb, and uses 22ufd 500v power supply filter caps along with some other modifications to the original 5e3 circuit. Thus, it has a little more power and a lot of room for different sounds with SS and various rectifier tubes, 6L6s, etc. I use a C12Q in mine and I like it. However, I will try an alnico in it some day just to see what I've been missing.

I was planning on building an amp but the price of a VHT special 6 was so low I couldn't resist. I built a couple of byoc pedals instead but, an amp is in the future.

There's Trinity amps.

[quote="TTSC"]Vox amp guy,

So the tube depot kit has a PCB instead of a turret/hand wired board? Just curious. Sure would speed up the work. The Hand wired police might come and get ya! :lol:

Regardless of what the "Hand wired cops say", I still had to hand wire the board to everthing else. The PCB just makes the resistors and caps faster to wire. Plus, I have quicker access to replace any component on the amp.

Screw those cork-sniffing pantywaists -- those are quality components in that amp and that's a top-notch mil-spec wiring job as well.

Heck of a lot cleaner wiring than the 68 Super Reverb I had a look inside the other day.
