what's the history and differene between silver and black face Super Reverbs? I played an old buddy's vintage silver face about 6 years ago, and it was okay, if I remember correctly. But I recently played the 65 reissue and was in love!! What's the diff? and when were they sliver and black?

I own a "first-year CBS" silver face and I have had it since it was new. A few years back I had it re-tubed with Groove Tubes and I brought a schematic for a Black Face with me for the tech to use. Unfortunatly, I'm a player, not a tech...fortunately my tech was very well informed and told me that there where some chassis and technical changes when CBS took over, and the schematic I supplied did not apply to my particular amp. I was surprised to find this out because I've owned and played older Black Face models and I know CBS did make some changes later that some feel where "less than desireable?" But I always thought that this amp held its own against any and all of them and that because it was the "first year" that CBS hadn't gotten their fingers in the pie too deeply yet.
I would think that the re-issues are designed as the original Black Faces where to remain authentic, but if you get a good deal on an early Silver Face, don'y pass just because of the color. Play it and make sure it's a solid unit and you should get the same sound (I can't tell the difference) and high mileage performance as a Black Face.

I got a 1967 silverface Pro Reverb-free-this past summer. It looks like it has a blackface chassis in it. Sure it's not a preCBS blackface but it still has that sweet Fender tube sound.
