( I realize this really isn't a vintage amp or a Fender - but this the only guitar gear forum I visit - plus I thought 63Supro and Retroverbial might find this amp pretty cool).

As alluded to in another thread.... I bought an Oahu Suitcase Amp from Vintage47. It came last week and its been a blast playing. The amp is extremely responsive. I just can say enough good things about it. I work out of my house.... and by 4:30 every day I am dying to get to it.

I had been thinking about getting an vintage Valco, but decided to get this fairly faithful recreation instead. The cost for this boutique - hand built amp is about the price for a champ clone kit. It seemed like a no-brainer to me. The Oahu is built like a tank. The pin-stripping on the tweed is hand applied.

It has an 8 inch hemp coned speaker by Tone Tubby specially built for Vintage47. And really gives a nice dark tone. Note that the amp has a second jack so you can connect an 8 ohm external speaker cabinet. This certainly is a good addition to my BF Champ and Tweed Harvard.

As stated before - I really like small watt amps. This only has tone and volume. I really want to get a Godin 5th Ave Kingpin to play with this amp.... but need to get rid of the VCXD and probably my Gibson Les Paul Faded DC. Neither of which I use much anymore.

The amp takes my Boss 63 Fender Reverb pedal and Boss Loop station very well. I don't use any other pedals... I pretty much like to play straight into the amp.

I have to say - its good-bye Vibro Champ XD.

Anyway.... just had to share

I must confess and profess total ignorance of this amp (and the original from which it was derived).

That said, I like what I see here!

I'm betting it's a blast to play with plenty of tone and vibe to go around.

Definitely a quality amp throughout.

Ya done good, kiddo......hand salute!

:)

Here's what an original looks like...

They were typically sold with a lap steel as part of the 1930's/40's Hawaiian craze.

Hi guys,

Anyone have a guess as to what this amp is? The stripes pattern is like the old Gibsons, if I'm seeing them correctly. It looks like many of the 40s lap steel amps that I've seen, I'm guessing Gibson. It looks like there used to be a rectangular plate on the front, just below the speaker, the outline of it is faintly visible. There are no brand names (other than on the speaker electromagnet case), or serial numbers, or tube chart anywhere that I can find. :?:

I think that is an old Valco.... Valco made amps for alot of different people, including Gibson and Gretsch and early Silvertones.

Check these websites to verify....
http://www.valcoamp.com/

http://www.valcopages.com/

While Vintage 47 makes recreations... they do have photos of alot of older valcos.
http://www.vintage47amps.com/files/index.php?id=1

I bet you could email any of those three websites and get confirmation.

Thanks phansford! I checked the site briefly, looks like some great info. It might take some time to peruse. Killer amp you have there, very nice vintage look. :)

I've admired vintage47's stuff for quite awhile, and it's nice to hear that the sound is lovely too.
His prices are very fair. Did you see his boost pedal for $40? I think that's about the lowest price point out there, and intend to give it a try.

Enjoy your beautiful honolulu honey!
