On another amp board there was a post about an upgrade available to boost the reverb section's power in Fender SF/BF amps. It involves the use of a ECL86 (one-half of a EL84 and one-half 12AX7), replacing the 12AT7 driver/12AX7 recovery tube. Of course the author doesn't want to post any schematics. Or go into details about power transformers, reverb chokes, etc.

Has anyone here ever done this mod? Sounds kinda interesting.

I've never heard of this mod. Not sure of the benefit here, or if it's even worth it. I simply use a J/J 12AX7 for recovery. They have more push than gain, and to me, they work well here. I don't like them in the tone section though. You could also try an AX7 as the driver, but it may harshen your reverb. Try it if you haven't already.......barryg

I'm constantly amazed at the number of genuises who've convinced themselves that they know more than Leo Fender, Paul Sprang, Bob Rissi, Ed Jahns, Paul Rivera, Bruce Zinky, etc.

Mebbe those internet einsteins should've invented the Fender amp......

Arjay, thanks for your comments. I know what you mean. BTW... I went over to this old amp tech's place the other day. I was looking at all the "junk" he's collected at his business. And in the corner, what was sitting there? An old gray K&F amp. With a tiny 8-inch field coil speaker.

Boy, did that amp sound GOOD! So even before there was a Fender amp, Leo knew something about amps.

There's been a lot of mods developed over the years that legitimately improve an amp's tone, convenience, reliability, or safety but this undocumented-and-anonymous "tossed over the transom" internet crap can be great way to turn a decent piece of gear into a basketcase.

Caveat Emptor!

I think the oldest Fender amp I ever played was a '51 TV-front Pro. It had a great saturated-and-compressed tone when "dozened", rich in harmonic content and overdriven vibe. And like everything that Leo ever designed and manufactured, it was solid -- like a Sherman tank.
