I have an SF Princeton (AA964) that needs all kinds of TLC. Like new trannies, good number of component replacements, all 'lytics shot. In other words, a major overhaul. I was thinking.... (Oh! Oh! The sound of brain waves generating deadly gases)

Thinking of changing this amp back to tweed Tremolux circuit. The Tremolux ran a pair of 6V6GT, in cathode biased, Class "A" setting. My guess would be close to the 5A3 tweed Deluxe tone.

Anyone ever try this mod before? Are the stock PT and OPT from a SF Princeton amendable to the mods needed? Or should I hunt for tweed era iron compatible to the Tremolux?

Was thinking that this may bridge the tone between a Champ and my stock BF (AA764) Princeton Reverb (minus the reverb). Schematic and layouts follow:

Any thoughts? Thanks!

It looks do-able, especially since there's no NFL or variable presence control that needs to be added. The tone stack may pose a bit of a challenge since the Tremolux has a single unified tone control but that may work to the amp's advantage. The bias-wiggle trem circuits are virtually identical so that should be a non-issue.

Arjay, Thanks! Wonder why I haven't heard of this mod, esp when SF Princetons were relatively inexpensive.

I'll get on it as soon as Holidays (and vacation) is over...

I tried to con one of my peeps into trying this conversion on a derelict silverface Bandmaster head -- "tweeding" both channels with cathode-follower tone stacks, and changing the vibrato from a trem roach to a bias-wiggle. We talked about it for quite some time but in the end he sold the amp to some cross-eyed cousin of his. The kid ended up trading it for a Peavey Vyper or some such. What a wasted opportunity......
