Hi, was wondering what is a normal volume setting for an original 64 twin reverb to start to break up at. Just bought one and it starts to break up a bit around 3-4 which I thought seemed a little early. I had always read that these had tons of clean head room. It sounds great - but would love a little more clean head room.

Is this normal or possibly a sign of a bad tube or something?

Any ideas?

Also, it's got the orange jbl d120fs in it and I had read somewhere that it's bad for those speakers to be overdriven. Is this true? They sound pretty damn good with it cranked although I have to stand in another room to be able to stand it:) Anyway, just didn't want to damage them if they're really not supposed to be driven hard.

On a side note, and probably more importantly, I'm also occasionally experiencing a really weird noise that happens when I switch the standby switch to operate. For a while today it would do it every time I flipped that switch, but then I turned it off, jiggle some connections in the back and the tubes and it stopped for the time being.

Here is a mp3 of the sound:

Planning on taking it in to a tech on Thurs to get looked at but since it may not be making this noise at the time the tech is actually looking at it (as always happens when something is wrong with equipment) wanted to post it here to see what people think might be causing it.

thx

I've never heard a sound like that in all the time I've been using tube amps but maybe someone here has,I've heard an amp "motorboating" and it could be a form of that....but yeah, get it to a good tech, but make sure he is really a "good" tech...some aren't.

The early onset of distortion & oddball noises could mean you need new power supply caps. Really, it could be a number of things. Tech is in order.

My BF TR plays clean to a painfully loud level (way past "6"). It, too is loaded with JBL D120F's. I known what you mean about standing back. Cords and arms aren't long enough.

So I took it to a tech and he replaced and biased all the power tubes with =C= 6L6s and all the preamp tubes as well. When I got it home I thought it was sounding better and the hum at idle has definitely quieted down, but now there's a new hum that starts at about 2 and increases in volume until about 7 where it begins to quiet down again until it almost completely goes away again at 10. The hum also seems a bit quieter right after you turn the amp on and for the first few minutes you play but gets louder the longer you play.

In addition to the hum, it still seems like it's sounding distorted at low volumes, but it doesn't really seem like tube distortion, but more like a crappy scratchy distortion. It sounds really $@!&#* when you record with it (which I decided to try to see if that could help me isolate the different noises and rattles - sometimes it's hard to tell if it's just other stuff in the room rattling.)

I'd like to double check that it's not the speakers causing it and was wondering if I could hook it up to a 2x12 cab i have on my Silvertone Twin Twelve. I don't know anything about wiring or electronics and just wanted to make sure that it's ok to hook that cab up to this amp or if the speakers have different ohms or whatever and might get damaged. I think that one has Jensen 12s in it.

Any thoughts would be appreciated. Planning on taking it to my regular amp tech next week (the one I took it to was from the place I bought it and not my regular guy.)

thanks again for everyone's responses.

Sounds like the amp needs a good looking over. Sounds like a filter cap or coupling cap issue. But, that's just a WAG of the first order. Amp needs TLC from good tech. From front end to power section, IMHO.

+1000!

This amp is begging for a comprehesive bench check by a competent tech who knows what he's looking at and knows what he's looking for.

Anything less would be a sacrilege!

Your tech give you the amp with some problems !!!!!!! What kind of tech he is ?

It's funny how people in search of a tech does't read or understand when we write : "Find a realy good tech"
