Hello and Merry Christmas all,

I'm having a minor problem with my '74 Silverface Champ. It sounds excellent up to about 7, however when I push the amp above 7 to 10 it sounds like it’s going to explode. It’s in the amp, not the speaker. It begins to crackle with static. You can still hear the guitar sound but the electronic noise is really bad. Any ideas? Bad tube maybe?

It's sounds as if you're ready for a new speaker.

To confirm, disconnect the existing driver and wire the amp up to a known good 4Ω speaker (or 4Ω speaker system). If the amp sounds normal the internal speaker is ready for replacement or re-coning. If you still hear weird noises then the amp requires some attention.

HTH

You may want to try cleaning the tube's pins and sockets with contact cleaner & see what happens.

Hi jprzech,

Good suggestions here. I would suggest checking the power supply caps, they often get weak with age, and it would tend to show more at higher volumes (more current).
