Some of you might remember the '60 Super I bought awhile back,it had been modded to have a solid state rectifier, and needed the filter caps replaced and some other maintenence,it sounded good the way it was but I wanted to have it changed back to a tube rectifier first of all .I have a friend who is retired and the only guy in this small county that I trust to work on things that are beyond what I can do at this time.
He put in a new power transformer because the one in it didn't have a wire that was needed for a tube rectifier, sorry I can't remember which wire that was...still kinda new to some of this tech stuff.
here's a link to the thread with some pics of the amp and it's condition when I first bought it.

I can't believe how this amp is starting to sound, the speakers are starting to open up a bit and the mix of Mallory and Sprague caps have a nice range if that's possible,Gerald Weber had said at one time he liked to mix them in different stages,so we decided to give it a try.
The pine cabinet has a resonance that needs no onboard reverb...and for the blues like I like to play,I think this has the beginnings of an alltime favorite amp,and that's saying a lot.

That's beautious, Reb ! Bet it sounds even better than it looks ! I also use different caps in my amps: PIO Alessandros, Victoria polys, and Sprague. BTW, which PT did you use ? Art

Thanks Art,it's starting to really sound great it has a nice crunch and some great harmonics...sweet sustain,I have a hard time explaining sounds and tone.
He used a PT made by Hammond,I believe,I would have thought about a Mercury tranny, but what the heck,I'm happy..... :D

That's a great looking chassis, RS......just about as original as you could hope for.

I hate to see those "scorched-earth restorations" where all the carbon-comp resistors and paper caps are ditched in favor of that horrid-looking-and-sterile-sounding metal oxide and mylar film crap. You've got a great tech there!

Arjay

thanks Arjay, the guy who worked on it is an old friend,he's in his early 70's and having health issues,so I just give him something and tell him I'm in no hurry and let him do his thing.
He is a life long guitar player who worked professionally for years and actually met Leo Fender and George Fullerton one time and toured the factory...the singer he worked with,Rex Allen Jr.,had connections to get them in.
I'm learning everything I can from him,but he is the guy I go to for the technical stuff....he works on it until it sounds right to him,and is an honest guy....I can't imagine taking something to a music store around here, you have to hunt up the experts in their own shops.

Beautiful work! BTW... did he put a 5AR4/GZ4, 5U4GB, or some other tube rectifier into your amp? For these older Fenders, I kinda like the sag of the 5U4GB over the stoutness of a 5AR4.

Thanks!

I put a 5AR4 in it but might play around with a 5U4GB in the future if it seems feasible,I have some NOS 5U4's packed away.
