I have a JBL D120F Orange Basket that doesnt work. The speaker looks perfect from the outside and has the original cone with no apparent problems. Im guessing its the voice coil so I took it to a local Austin speaker repair shop and the lady told me I had to replace the cone to get in fixed. Is that right? Is there no way to go in from the back without replacing my treasured original cone? Ive heard reconed D120s and they dont sound the same to me. Any suggestions? Or do I just take the bullet and thats the way it is with vintage speakers? Friends suggest going to a more modern speaker with a simular sound like Celestrons but I dont think they sound like the old JBLs at all to me. Is that unique sound becoming a thing of the past?

Your speaker needs reconing -- no two ways about it.

That said, there are only two places that I personally trust with my JBLs (I'm sure there are others but these have both done restorations for me and I feel confident in recommending them):

Orange County Speaker Service in southern California

Neal's Speaker Service in Sacramento

For a D/K120, expect to pay at least $125.

As for a replacement speaker that sounds like a JBL, forget it......there are none.

Weber's hype about their California series is just that -- hype. I've used JBL's nearly exclusively for over forty years and nothing sounds the same. An Altec 417-8C is close but lacks some of the bottom-end punch of the D120F.

Best of luck, HTH
