I have a 70s silverface champ that still has the original 2 prong socket. Would there be an advantage of switching to a 3 prong?

Sure.

It's less likely that the amp will kill you due to a grounding issue.

Thanks, shimmilou.

The 3-wire power cable conversion is a mandatory safety upgrade that's relatively inexpensive. If the owner is knowledgeable and so inclined, it can easily be performed using common hand tools and some common sense without having to schedule an appointment with an amp tech.

Perhaps, but the hum sounds like an unrelated issue.

The amp is likely in need of a new cap can (the large vertical cylinder on the chassis adjacent to the output transformer). This device contains several capacitors that are intended to filter AC ripples out of the high-voltage DC circuit that powers the tubes. If/when these capacitors begin to fail the initial symptom is hum. As they further deteriorate, actual damage to the amp's components may occur.

Unplugged the amp flipped the cord over plugged back in problem solved, thanks to a local amp tech. Never would have thought of that in a million years.

This particular Fender amp has no polarity switch, Stratele -- "on/off" only.

???

I would say "problem put off until forgotten about, waiting to strike again". You should still heed Retroverbial's advice, replace with three prong plug and be SURE that you are safe instead of relying on plugging in to the right polarity each time.

Seriously?! that advice from a "local amp tech"
you gotta be kidding!
I really don't think you understand what we're talking about...go stick your lips to a mic that is sourced from another socket...have you never been warned about the dangers of ungrounded equipment???
Hey it's your life, electricity doesn't give you many chances to be stupid.
