Cool, don't know how I missed that, Louis. Guess I wasn't paying attention. These mid west corn fields must be lulling me into some kind of wierd suspended mind set. BTW I'm half Canadian, my dad was born in Winnepeg. Art

Yeah for sure, Arjay, the ripple is right there. You know, Chris, if that #8 pin tests out to be around +480 DC or so, I'd call it good. Any more testing in the amp is probably not necessary, for now. Sometimes I exaggerate the inspection process. MY BAD ! Stratele, maybe he meant the positive side. BTW is your name Louis ? Mine is Art.

Hi Art,

I am getting 0vdc at pin 8 of 5U4 - dead rectifier .... me thinks. Well I have another coming in soon (I hope).

And to complete the circle, I am from Toronto so it looks like the Canucks (partial or otherwise) are definitely in attendance in this forum :-)

Thanks to you all Art, Arjay and Louis - your help and support is greatly appreciated.

Chris

Well, Canada Post dropped some rectifier tubes for me this week - woo hoo! But since my MiL is visiting from Ireland I decided I would hold off until she left (since she is occupying my man cave/office/guest suite). But tonight I could not resist since I had some time and access to the "lab".

Well, popped in the rectifier (with all other tubes out) and let them amp warm up. All looked good. So I decided to take the big step and put back all tubes. So I did and at first nothing but big noise and hum - oh oh. But realized that I had not plugged in reverb tank and was using vibrato channel. So then I switched from Standby and it all went quiet - like ominously so and I got REALLY nervous. A few strums and nothing. So I switch back to standby and music appears. Is the standby switch wired in a way that when the toogle points to standby it is in fact NOT stood by? :-)

Anyway, with reverb tank and footswitch plugged in, I was playing my amp for the first real time. Nice and actually quite quiet. But because it is SOOOO loud, I can only get to 1 or 2 on the dial. But nonetheless it works and quite well. It is a bit dirty in the pots and has some nasty attack sensitive growl happening on middle pickup but all in all, a nice day for me! And even the reverb and vibrato works far in excess of my expectations. Amazing really that such an old amp that, in my case, has been probably hanging out in smoky bars FOREVER. I am kinda pleasantly surprised it is working so well with only my little effort so far.

So now I will try and get the rest of the work done on it. Next up is a full cleaning of pots, switches, jacks etc and I think I will try to burnish up the tube pins/sockets etc.

So, now I need one more piece of advice. I know I need to tame the volume and I think the best way is with some kind of output load attenuator like the Weber products. Does anyone have any experience with such devices? Any preferences I should consider? Since the output load on the SFSR is 2 ohms is that the load device spec I should be pursuing?

Also, it doing tolex a real pain or is it quite possible for a DIY kinda guy like me? My tolex leaves much to be desired.....

Thank again everyone!

All Right!!! That's good news, Chris ! The Weber attentuators are adjustable for different output transformers and pretty versatile devices. The THD type would have to be a 2ohm device. Your cleaning plans sound like a good idea. For the tube sockets, you just need to spray the tube pins and insert and remove a couple of times. If the power tube or rectifier sockets have a loose feel, then the socket pin receptacles can be slightly bent inwards, with a small pick. Have Fun ! Art

Good news takerc.

I have a Weber Mass 50 Attenuator and I like it. I have a friend which he use and preferred THD.

He never use my Weber and I never try is THD . For me. Weber can use any speaker impedance, it's a good buy
