I don't think "wheat" was used with any of the blackface amps. I have seen it used on some restorations but it wouldn't be my first choice -- I generally use the current FMIC cloth which isn't correct either. But until a source for more accurate cloth comes forth, it's what we're stuck with. Here's a pic of my recently-restored '67 Showman......

Compare and contrast with my all-original '65 Princeton Reverb......

The Showman came out swell but you can see the differences between vintage cloth and the reproduction.

No, the brown amp is a custom repro that I built myself......

Before its "reincarnation" it was a '68 silverface Bandmaster head.

The Strat was my first attempt at a "home-made" custom shop job.

How I faux stained my grill cloth to look like a vintage 64 Blackface cab :D

So I have an orginal blackface bandmaster in Great condition, but the cabinet was a modified 70's cabinet. I modified it to the correct dimensions of the original cabinet. The only problem was the the grillcloth was very silvery and not golden brown.. so.. here was my solution. (Yes I could have bought new fabric from MOJO.. but this was basically free and I got instant results!)

I tried using coffee in a spray bottle.... didn't really work.. very subtle.. not really the right colour... next I tried to use a orange brown stain for wood.... was the not "gold enough" ... so next I did what I should have done in the first place.. being an artist this should have been my first choice...

I grabbed my oil paints, and mixed the exact colour ( used Windsor Newton - Raw Sienna, and a small amount of Cadmium Yellow light) and diluted it with a bit of thinner, and used a medium sized brush to stain the cloth. I did it outside, and did a about 2-3 coats. I gauged the amount by looking a the (original amp head) for comparison. I was careful to look at it from various angles to make sure the colour was even and not patchy... end result was easily acheived in a matter of about 30 minutes. Let it dry outside. Looks like an exact match to my 64 blackface head!! Whoohoo!

Here is the result of my Faux stain on my 70's grill cloth. I unfortunately didnt take any before pictures.. sorry. But suffice to say it looked like a 70's siverface type look, and didnt match the amp head (Which is original).
