Hi everyone,
First, sorry for the sarcastic subject title but I'm a wee bit miffed!

On Sat I bought an mim white strat from a rep Fender dealer (I was very impressed they had at least a dozen MIM leftys), I think it's awesome.

So today I decided what the heck take a last kick at the can to buy a lefty Am standard, (my thinking was trade in my 1978 silverface twin reverb which is in VG shape, no rips etc. etc. I still have the envelope with warrenty card, tags & manual.

Any way I left the amp in my car & went in to talk to the sales rep who sold me the MIM on Sat. to see if I can make a deal figuring if so I'll bring it in from the car & talk money (I'm 60 & the amp weighs a lot more then it used to!! which is why I didn't just walk in with it.

I should mention I was also willing to part with my lefty Hwy 1 & amp together to sweeten the deal but they would not take both, which I understand even though I would still have had to pay a couple hundred $$ & decided to move the amp, only because I can barely left it these days!

Well I told them what amp I had to trade, I was sort of dismayed when he said they weren't interested in the amp because " it's an old tube amp" reading all these forums with Classic Amps, what exactly is classic & old?

So I'm thinkin Old = trade in value 0 Classic = selling same amp at $$$$
Needless to say no deal was made & I will keep what I have.
I did think however my 78 twin should have been worth a afew $$$$

I too have a '78 ultra-linear Twin Reverb, factory-equipped with JBL D120Fs. TR's with the base speakers are worth $600-$750, contingent upon condition. With the speaker upgrade, perhaps $900. But those estimates are "on a good day". And right now (with current market conditions) it's not a 'good day'.

Sad, but as with Murray and company in "Stripes"......

"Da's da fac', Jack!"

Yeah, I agree ! It's a shame that the Silverface amps and Twin Reverbs, are getting such shabby treatment on the used market. I can see the store's side of it, never can tell what you're getting into. But it also seems like the Twins have fallen out of favor, for now. If your amp had been a Deluxe, the reaction may have been very different. As far as Classic, my guess would be pre Silverface or even pre CBS, and older. I'm 61, and know what you're sayin' about the weight ! Art

And I bet your JBL equipped Twins are heavier than my old 763 was. Wish I could have kept it, but turned it over for a piano. The things we do for our children. Good thing is, that she still plays that piano. Yeah, I guess that worked out for the best ! Too bad for my grandson though, he'll just get a Strat and an old Band Master. Art

im 40 and allthese young guys i jam with ,love these old tube amps!! tube amps are very hip and will always be cool, maybe he meant his market is really for enrty level begginer players .(a begginer would prefer a solid state or transistor amp all effects built in) was 78 a good year for silver face ?

We've talked about it before, but when I go into a Guitar Center store and see all these guys playing away on new amps made to LOOK & SOUND vintage, but with components that will never last 40/50 years....and then go into the vintage amp and guitar room, and look at the prices...well,there's something there that tells me vintage just doesn't = old.
But I know what you mean, the store places more value on what they have...in other words, their s*** is worth more than your s***.

Damn store is trying to sell their sh... not buy more from you :) Regardless how good it may be, they want cash. Kids buy cheap crap, you'd have better luck and get more money for your amp on CL or eBay. I've seen my local stores degrade over the years too, they used to carry cool vintage stuff but now I barely go in anymore except for the occasional emergency need for strings or cables.

Ah......but the beauty of it is, the young hottentots now running the chain stores often don't know what they've actually got when a vintage used piece is traded in.

One of our brothers here on the forum recently found what was marked as a "1 x 15 Bassman cab" at a franchise store in Tampa. He e-mailed me a pic via his cellphone and the item was instantly recognizable to me as an early blackface Showman "tone-ring" enclosure -- complete with its JBL speaker and ridiculously priced at $400 (they go for a minimum of six bills on Ebay). Needless to say, that "Bassman" cab went home with my friend that day, to be mated to an equally-vintage Bandmaster head. They sound great together!

Did someone say "Ignorance is bliss"?
