The speakers that are curently in my cab are the origional Fender by Utah 12" speakers. Other than the the ring and cone are seperating and giving the nasty popping sound the speakers are in very condition. I need some guidance on what to do. I live in El Paso and getting them reconed or repaired would mean for me to send them out and pay steep shpping charges. I have a 40w Bandmaster head and I am looking at maybe replacing them with 1 Celestion speakers. Im looking at 1 x Celestion Vintage 30 and either 1 x 70th Anniversary or 1 x Herritage 65. My other question is the watts of the speaker I match with the head? Do the watts have to be over, under, or the same as the output of the amp? I have read great reviews on the Celestion 70th Ann speaker but its a 30w speaker. And a good match on them would be 1xVintage and 1x70th Ann. Yout thoughts please..

Thanks

Mike

Hi Mike, and Welcome to the forum ! I have a V30 and a Weber California in an open-back cab, for my '67 Band Master. They're about 10yrs old, both 50 watt/8ohm. Works great for me with the Tele&Strat. I would go with a couple of 50watt(or so)speakers, but that is just my opinion. You could go with a couple of 25 watters if that gets the sound you're after. There are no rules carved in stone, as far as I know. And IMO there is no need to match the wattage. Have a friend with a Celestion Alnico Bulldog(15watt ratting) in a Twin Reverb with something else, and it's been sounding great for over 10yrs. Good Hunting ! Art

+1

I periodically play this '66 Bandmaster on stage with a pair of Celestion V30s......

For a heavy modern vibe with near-endless fattitude, it doesn't get much better than this. Your original Utahs were rated for 30 watts apiece but relatively speaking, they weren't particularly efficient drivers. Expect a surge in volume with Celestions or any other modern speaker.

Best of luck, HTH

Arjay

I'll second Arjay's opinion on the Utahs,I had 2 in a BF Pro Reverb in good condition and they didn't sound that great.
Go with new speakers....you'll be glad you did.

I've got 2 x 12" Celestion Greenbacks, 20 watts (i think) in a '68 'big' silverface cab (w/dripedge) for an early '68 silverface Bandmaster. I think they sound great. I sometimes run the bass on my doubleneck though them; sounds good but I'm afraid I might f_ up the speakers if I overdo it.

Not a great idea to hazard your Greenbacks with a bass.
