Hey everybody, new here, thought I'd chime in. I just dug my old '64 tremolux outta the garage today and fired it up. I had put an old sylvania 5V4GA rectifier in it a few years ago... Possibly a mislabed 5ar4 but it just didn't sound good with that tube, the amp sounded weak and farty.

I put a new 5ar4 in it and was blown away by the sound difference, It was louder and tighter, less sag, and it was starting to breakup around 3 on the volume knob with my les paul, crunchy and mean and awesome sounding at anything above 6. I took a look at the other tubes and realised I had replaced the 12at7 with a 12ax7 years ago as well. I still had the old rca 12at7 laying around so I put it back in there and the amp has a more headroom, it really sounds like a blackface now.

I'm thinking about putting a 12ax7 back in, it was really singing with that tube in there, sounded more like a brownface but less midrangey. Anybody know if it's safe to run these blackfaces with the 12ax7 in the pi? I don't want to blow anything.

No harm with be done. If the tone pleases you, go with it.

Arjay, as far as I can tell about the ONLY spot a "12AX7 for a 12AT7" may give problems is the reverb driver section. Doesn't Fender usually run around 10mA idle bias on that 12AT7? Whereas, most 12AX7's are happy around 1mA or so...

That's always been my understanding as well.
