Ok, here is my question(s)..

I have a 1978 fender bassman 4 ohm head that i use for guitar (love it too).. I recently just bought a Marshall 1960's classic cab with 4x12 celestion green back speakers 16 ohms 25 watts a speaker - 100 watt cab...

I know i want to get the wiring redone to make the ohms go down.. By doing this i will have more "power" and more of the "true" sound of the head and cab.. Please correct me if im wrong..

My question is, do i want (or should i) wire the cab to 4 ohms or have my amp tech bring it down to 8 ohms? What are the advantages / disadvantages of doing this... The amp just isnt doing it for me set at 16 ohms and im under the impressiong that it will be much better if and when i bring the ohms down....

Sorry i really dont know to much about this, i do understand there are different ways to wire speakers to change your set up.. THANKS ALOT EVERYONE...

You'll have the "best tone" from your amp with perfect match. If you use this cab only with this amp, do a rewiring at 4 ohms for the cab.

Agree with stratele52, 4-ohm cab would be best sound/performance for a 4-ohm amp. :)

What difference does it make?

Any Bassman head is optimized for a 4Ω load.

Hey, I like pics ! Wasn't there a 2X6L6 model too ? Wonder which amp the OP has ? Hope it's the smaller Bassman, that 4X12 cab at 4ohms would be pretty cool. When I first got the Band Master, I ran it through a Celestion loaded 4X12 cab. Hummm, wonder where that cab ended up ? Art

The 4 x 6L6 "Bassman 135" pictured traces its roots back to the Super Bassman of the early '70s, which itself is a direct descendant of the Twin Reverb (the chassis dimensions are identical). Thus, the Bassman 135 really isn't a Bassman at all......merely FMI's attempt to remain relevant during the era of the Sunn 2000S, Ampeg V4B, and Acoustic 370.

Yeah Arjay, what I was gettin' at was the Bassman 70. Thought those were also '78 models. The OP didn't say which Bassman he has. If we're talking about the 70, then the 100watt cab should be OK. But if it's a 135, I don't think so. Art

I'm not certain how much power those greenbacks are comfortable with. The V30's are good for 75 watts a pop so even if the amp were a B'Man 135, it would probably be alright. The greenbacks would prolly stay healthy as well assuming they're in serviceable condition. With a Bassman (either 50- or 70-watt version) I'd say expect no problems whatsoever. The Bassmans really sing with a quartet of Celestions IMO.
